Step aboard Princess Cruises and relive the golden age of travel — where timeless comfort, friendly connections, and effortless adventure come together. Discover why this classic cruise line remains a favourite for travellers seeking relaxation with a touch of elegance.
For many of us, the name Princess Cruises brings a smile to our faces, conjuring up memories of the iconic 1970s TV show, The Love Boat.1 That series introduced millions of people to the magic of cruising, painting a picture of a friendly, comfortable, and slightly glamorous way to explore the world. This legacy is a big part of why Princess holds such a special place in the hearts of senior travellers today. It represents a classic and reliable holiday where the journey is just as delightful as the destination. The sheer convenience is a massive drawcard; you unpack your bags just once and wake up to a new, exciting view each morning, without the fuss of airports, hotels, and hauling luggage around.4
But the appeal of Princess goes beyond simple nostalgia. It’s a cruise line that understands the desire for a holiday that perfectly balances relaxation with social connection. While the ships are wonderfully equipped for multi-generational family get-togethers, they also feature beautifully designed adults-only areas for those moments when you just want some peace and quiet.6 The atmosphere onboard is wonderfully welcoming, making it easy to strike up a conversation with like-minded travellers, perhaps during a lively game of trivia, a classic ballroom dancing class, or simply while enjoying a cuppa on the deck.4 It’s this blend of personal comfort and warm community that makes a Princess cruise feel like a home away from home.
In this guide, we’ll unpack everything you need to know to plan your perfect Princess holiday, from choosing the right ship and cabin to getting the best value for your dollar. Let’s set sail! 🚢
A little bit of planning goes a long way in making sure your cruise is smooth sailing from start to finish. Here’s what you need to know.
Timing your booking can make a big difference to the price you pay and the choices you have.
Beyond just the cruise fare, there are several ways to ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck.

Senior Saver: Are the All-Inclusive Packages Worth It?
One of the best ways to manage your onboard spending is with a Princess Plus or Princess Premier package. But do they offer good value? For most people, the answer is a resounding yes. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide.
| Item | Pay-As-You-Go (Approx. AUD) | Princess Plus ($79/day) | Princess Premier ($129/day) |
| Wi-Fi (1 device) | ~$38/day | Included | Included (4 devices) |
| Alcoholic Drinks | $15-22 per drink | 15 drinks/day (up to $22) | Unlimited (up to $30) |
| Specialty Coffees | $5-8 per coffee | Included | Included |
| Casual Dining Meals | ~$23 per meal | 4 per cruise | Unlimited |
| Specialty Dining | ~$80 per meal | – | Unlimited |
The Verdict: The value is clear. If you plan on having just 3-4 alcoholic drinks and using the Wi-Fi each day, the Princess Plus package has already paid for itself.16 The Premier package is a fantastic option for those who want the ultimate indulgence, with unlimited specialty dining and premium drinks included.
An Important Note for Aussie Cruisers: On international sailings (where the currency is USD), these packages also include the daily crew gratuities. However, on local cruises departing from Australia, gratuities are already built into your base fare.25 The package price doesn’t change, so this “included” benefit doesn’t apply. This means the value proposition on local sailings rests more heavily on your drink and Wi-Fi usage, but for most, it still represents excellent value.
Whether you want to share photos with family back home or just check the news, staying connected at sea is easier than ever.
Princess places a high priority on the health and safety of its guests, with excellent medical facilities and clear procedures in place.
There’s never a dull moment on a Princess cruise, with a fantastic variety of activities designed to entertain, engage, and enrich.
One of the best parts of a cruise is the people you meet along the way. Princess makes it wonderfully easy to connect with your fellow travellers.

Dining & Cuisine: The day revolves around wonderful food. You can enjoy a leisurely multi-course meal in the grand main dining room, grab a quick and varied bite from the casual buffet, enjoy a burger by the pool, or treat yourself to an evening at a fine-dining specialty restaurant.73
Entertainment & Enrichment: Days are often filled with engaging activities. You might attend an enrichment lecture about your next port, join a dance class, test your knowledge at a trivia competition, or browse the artworks at a Champagne art auction.43 In the evening, the ship comes alive with dazzling Broadway-style production shows, live musicians in the lounges, and hilarious comedians and magicians.76
Wellness & Relaxation: For those seeking to unwind, the options are plentiful. You can indulge in a massage or treatment at the Lotus Spa, work up a sweat in the state-of-the-art fitness centre, or escape to The Sanctuary, a serene, adults-only retreat with plush loungers and dedicated service.35 And a good night’s sleep is guaranteed on the award-winning Princess Luxury Bed, found in every cabin.77
Activities & Classes: There’s always something to do. You can join a high-energy Zumba class, learn the salsa, play a round of mini-golf or a game of shuffleboard on the top deck, or simply find a comfortable chair and lose yourself in a good book.75
Evening Programs: A typical evening might start with pre-dinner drinks in a sophisticated lounge, listening to a live pianist or jazz trio. After dinner, you could head to the main theatre for a spectacular show, or for a more relaxed evening, grab a blanket and some popcorn for a film at the giant poolside screen for Movies Under the Stars®.76
Sea Days vs. Port Days: The rhythm of the ship changes depending on the schedule. Sea days are bustling with a full program of onboard activities from morning to night.80 On port days, the ship is much quieter, making it the perfect time to enjoy the pools, spa, or a quiet lounge with fewer people around.32
One of the greatest joys of cruising is waking up in a new place, ready to explore. Princess offers a vast array of shore excursions to help you make the most of your time in port.
Excursion Style & Pricing: You’ll find a huge variety of tours, from city sightseeing and historical walking tours to culinary experiences and scenic drives.93 Prices for Australian excursions can range from around
$70 AUD for a short guided walk to over $300 AUD for a full-day trip, such as an excursion to the Blue Mountains from Sydney.94
Activity Level Classifications: To help you choose an appropriate tour, excursions are rated by activity level: Easy, Moderate, or Strenuous.11 “Easy” tours are great for those with limited mobility, typically involving minimal walking and travel by coach. “Moderate” tours may include some walking on uneven surfaces or steps.95
Independent Touring vs. Ship Excursions:
Port Accessibility Challenges: As mentioned earlier, the most significant challenge for travellers with mobility issues is at tender ports. At these ports, guests using mobility scooters are generally not permitted on the small tender boats, and access for wheelchair users is at the Captain’s discretion based on sea conditions.71 Even at docked ports, the steepness of the gangway can sometimes pose a challenge.30
Booking & Cancellation: It’s best to book your excursions before you cruise via the online Cruise Personalizer, as popular tours sell out quickly.48 If the ship has to cancel a port visit for any reason, any shore excursions you’ve booked through Princess for that port will be automatically and fully refunded.98
Travel Tip: Using Third-Party Tour Operators
If you decide to book independently, use reputable, well-known online platforms like Viator, Shore Excursions Group, or GetYourGuide. These sites act as a marketplace for local tour operators. Always read recent reviews from other cruisers, check that the company offers a “return to ship” guarantee, and confirm that the tour’s meeting point is conveniently located near the cruise terminal. Booking with an established operator who understands cruise ship schedules is key to a stress-free day ashore.
With a whole fleet to choose from, picking the right ship and cabin is a key part of planning your perfect getaway.
The Princess fleet is generally divided into four main categories, or “classes,” of ships.
Ship Categories: The newest and largest vessels belong to the Sphere Class (Sun Princess) and the popular Royal Class (which includes Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess, and Sky Princess). These are modern mega-ships packed with the latest features and the widest variety of dining and entertainment options.7 The slightly older and smaller
Grand Class and Coral Class ships offer a more traditional and intimate cruise experience, which many seasoned travellers prefer.7
Best Ships for Seniors:
Your stateroom is your private retreat, so choosing the right one is important.
The Main Types:
Accessible Cabins: Princess offers a number of accessible staterooms designed for wheelchair users. These cabins are larger, with wider doorways (around 78-91cm) to both the cabin and the bathroom. The bathrooms are equipped with a roll-in shower, a fold-down seat, grab bars, and an emergency call button.64
Solo Cabins: Unfortunately, Princess does not have dedicated single-person cabins on most of its ships. This means solo travellers usually have to book a standard two-person cabin and pay a “single supplement,” which is often 100% of the second passenger’s fare. This can make cruising solo quite expensive, a significant factor to consider in your budget.34
Understanding the ship’s layout and services can make your holiday much smoother, especially if you have mobility needs.
Medical Centres: Every ship in the fleet has an onboard medical centre. It is staffed by registered doctors and nurses and is available 24/7 for emergencies. It operates like a well-equipped clinic or urgent care centre, able to handle common ailments and stabilise more serious conditions, but it is not a full-service hospital.26
Mobility Aid Storage & Charging: This is a critical safety rule: all personal mobility devices, including scooters and wheelchairs, must be stored and charged inside your stateroom. They cannot be left in the hallways or public areas, as this creates an obstruction.64 When choosing your cabin, you’ll need to ensure it’s large enough to comfortably accommodate your device.
Elevator & Deck Accessibility: All public areas are generally accessible via elevators, which have wide doorways (91-106cm) suitable for most mobility devices.64 However, it’s important to be aware that some guests have reported challenges on older ships, such as unexpected steps into certain lounges or steep ramps that can be difficult to navigate.30
For travellers with mobility concerns, the choice of itinerary can be just as important as the choice of ship. The biggest hurdle can be “tender ports,” where the ship anchors offshore and uses small boats to ferry passengers to land.71 Due to safety reasons, mobility scooters are generally not allowed on these tender boats, and even manual wheelchair users may be unable to go ashore depending on the sea conditions.31 This could mean missing out on several ports. Therefore, it is highly advisable to check your itinerary carefully and prioritise cruises that dock directly at the pier, as this will provide a much more reliable and enjoyable experience.
