Did You Know?
Amadeus is a true family affair! Founded over 40 years ago by Dr. Wolfgang Lüftner, one of the pioneers of European river cruising, the company is still proudly run by the Lüftner family today. Their personal touch and passion for authentic hospitality are felt in every detail, from the thoughtful ship design to the warm welcome you receive onboard.3
Getting to Your River Cruise
As Amadeus is a European company, they don’t typically sell flight-inclusive packages from Australia.34 This is actually a great advantage, as it gives you the flexibility to use your frequent flyer points, choose your favourite airline, or book a great deal when you see one. You can, however, book pre- and post-cruise hotel stays and airport transfers directly with Amadeus, which simplifies your arrival and departure logistics beautifully.18
For Aussies, the most common flight path to Europe is the famous “Kangaroo Route,” which involves a stop in Asia or the Middle East. Hubs like Singapore, Dubai, and Doha are the most popular choices and are serviced by world-class airlines.37 Breaking up the long journey with a one or two-night stopover in one of these vibrant cities is a fantastic way to arrive in Europe feeling more refreshed and ready for your cruise.
Travel Tip: Beating the Jet Lag
That long haul from Australia can be a doozy! Here’s how to arrive feeling your best:
Dining is a centrepiece of the Amadeus experience, and the quality is consistently praised by guests.19 The main Panorama Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with menus that cleverly incorporate specialties from the regions you’re sailing through.30 An onboard baker ensures that the bread and pastries are fresh and delicious every single day.29
While breakfast and lunch feature open seating, Amadeus has a more traditional approach for dinner with assigned tables.29 This is a wonderful way to get to know your fellow travellers over the course of the week, turning mealtimes into a warm and social occasion with new friends. To complement the wonderful food, a curated selection of excellent European red and white wines, local beers, and soft drinks are served on a complimentary, free-flowing basis with every lunch and dinner.5
The culinary team is well-equipped to handle special dietary needs, but advance notice is crucial. Be sure to inform the cruise line of any requirements—such as vegetarian, gluten-free, or specific allergies—at the time of booking.73 A vegetarian option is always included on the daily dinner menu, and reviewers have noted the deliciousness of these choices.16 As is common on river ships, there is no room service available.
You Should Know:
Because river ships have much smaller galleys (kitchens) than their ocean-going cousins, the variety of choices at each meal will be more limited. Expect a few exquisitely prepared options for each course rather than a sprawling, 20-page menu.
Entertainment on a river cruise is designed to be sophisticated, intimate, and connected to the destinations you visit. Forget the flashy casinos and Broadway-style shows of ocean liners; here, the experience is much more refined.
Evenings are centred in the elegant Panorama Lounge, where a resident musical duo might play relaxing tunes perfect for a conversation or a bit of dancing.50 The Cruise Director gives an engaging talk each evening about the next day’s port of call, weaving in fascinating stories and historical context. On certain nights, Amadeus brings local culture onboard, with performances from classical musicians, folk dancers, or even a traditional sea shanty choir.69 Daytime activities are minimal, as the focus is on the shore excursions and passing scenery, but you might find a fun quiz or a cooking demonstration on the schedule. For quiet moments, the Amadeus Club offers a peaceful library and space for a game of cards.6
Travel Tip:
Evenings on the river are generally quiet and wrap up early. Pack a good book, download a few movies to your tablet, or bring a deck of cards. It’s the perfect opportunity to relax and recharge for the next day’s adventure.
The social atmosphere is one of the most enjoyable aspects of an Amadeus cruise. The small ship size fosters a wonderfully friendly and intimate environment.
With fewer than 170 guests, it’s easy to strike up conversations and make new friends in the lounge or on the sun deck. The potential downside is that there’s little anonymity—you will see the same friendly faces each day.21 The assigned seating at dinner is designed to help you build a rapport with your tablemates over the week.29 Amadeus attracts a truly international mix of travellers from Europe, North America, the UK, and beyond.20 While English is the official language onboard, you’ll hear a variety of accents, which adds to the cosmopolitan and sophisticated feel of the journey.79
You Should Know:
The social dynamic on a small ship is a big part of the experience. You’ll be sharing meals and tours with the same group of people for a week. This is wonderful for making new friends, but it’s worth noting that if you prefer a more anonymous holiday, a larger ocean ship might be a better fit.
When looking at the price of an Amadeus cruise, it’s important to understand their value proposition. Comparing their upfront fare to a fully all-inclusive line isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison. The real value lies in the flexibility and high quality of what is included.
To get a “true cost” for comparison, take the cruise fare and add the cost of an excursion package you’re likely to choose, plus the recommended gratuities. For an 8-day cruise, this might mean adding roughly A$700-$800 per person to the base price. Even with these additions, Amadeus often represents excellent value against other premium lines.
The premium price is worth it for travellers who appreciate modern, elegant ships, superb food and wine, and personalised service. It’s especially good value for those who don’t want to pay for a bundle of excursions they might not take. The main “hidden costs” to budget for are the optional tours and discretionary gratuities. It’s also worth noting that, like many travel companies, their terms include a clause for a potential fuel surcharge if oil prices rise dramatically, though this is rare.76 And for us Aussies, the long-haul flight is a significant part of the total holiday cost that needs to be factored in from the start.
Finally, comprehensive travel insurance is not just recommended; it’s essential. Ensure your policy has high coverage for medical emergencies and, crucially, medical evacuation. It should also cover trip cancellation or interruption due to unforeseen events, including the river being too high or too low to sail.67
Amadeus is a true European specialist, focusing all their expertise on the continent’s most beautiful waterways. You won’t find them in Asia or Egypt; they stick to what they know and do best.14
While some cruise lines venture further afield, Amadeus has chosen to perfect the art of European river cruising. They focus exclusively on the rivers of Europe, meaning you benefit from their deep, concentrated expertise in this one magnificent region.
So, is Amadeus the right choice for your next European adventure? Here’s our take.

Amadeus’s flexible excursion program is a major drawcard. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, you get to build the holiday that suits you.
Tours are offered “a la carte” or in discounted packages that you can book before you go, which saves you 15%.50 They are thoughtfully categorised to help you choose:
Classic: These are your essential cultural and historical tours, usually walking or coach tours of the main sights.282
Active: For those who like to keep moving, these include guided bicycle tours or hikes in the scenic countryside.28
Taste: A foodie’s delight! These excursions focus on culinary experiences like wine tastings at local vineyards or visits to famous food markets.28
To help you gauge the physical demand, each tour is also rated on a 1-5 scale for walking intensity, a very helpful tool for ensuring you pick something comfortable for your fitness level.28 Tour groups are kept small, usually around 20-25 people, ensuring a more personal experience. And of course, you always have the option to skip the organised tours, grab one of the ship’s complimentary e-bikes, and set off on your own adventure along the riverbank.49
Senior Saver:
For many classic itineraries like the Rhine or Danube, the “Classic” excursions in the basic package will cover all the must-see highlights. Consider upgrading to more active or culinary tours only if you have a special interest. The freedom to simply use the ship’s free bikes for a gentle ride along the riverbank is often the best and most affordable excursion of all!
River ships are marvels of engineering, specifically designed to be long and narrow (typically 135 metres by 11.4 metres) so they can navigate Europe’s historic locks and glide under low bridges.9 This intimate scale is what makes them so different from their ocean-going cousins.
Most Amadeus ships feature four decks 55:
For seniors, the best cabin locations are typically mid-ship on the Mozart or Strauss decks. This central spot minimises walking distance to the lounge and restaurant and is the most stable part of the ship, away from any potential engine vibrations at the back. It’s important to note that while a lift connects the main interior decks (Mozart and Strauss), it usually does not go up to the Sun Deck, which is accessible only by stairs.53
Your cabin is your private sanctuary, and Amadeus offers several excellent options.
Expect cabins to be cosy but brilliantly designed. Standard cabins are typically around 16-17.5 square metres, while the more spacious suites are about 26.4 square metres.61 A standout feature on many of the newer ships is a proper walk-in wardrobe, which provides an amazing amount of storage space.20 For solo travellers, the AMADEUS Brilliant and AMADEUS Diamond even offer dedicated single cabins (10 sqm) with no single supplement.22
We believe in being upfront so you can make the best choice for your holiday. River cruising can be challenging for those with limited mobility.
For these reasons, Amadeus cruises are not recommended for travellers who rely on a wheelchair full-time or cannot comfortably manage a flight of stairs. The cruise line requires that any guest needing significant assistance must travel with an able-bodied companion.25
