Holland America has been a favourite among discerning travellers for generations. Here are a few of the “high-joy” reasons why it might be the perfect choice for your next holiday.
Did You Know?
Holland America Line has a history stretching back over 150 years! The company was founded on April 18, 1873, and its first ship, the Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. For decades, it was a major carrier of immigrants coming to the New World, bringing over two million people to start a new life.29
Travel Tip: Choosing the Best Cabin for You
Senior Saver: Is the ‘Have It All’ Package Good Value?
In a word, yes! The “Have It All” package (approx. AU$85 per person, per day) is the smartest way to manage your onboard spending. It includes the Signature Beverage Package, which covers most beers, wines by the glass, standard spirits, cocktails, specialty coffees, and sodas up to US$11 each, with a generous 15-drink daily limit.32
Let’s do the maths. A glass of wine might be US10,a cocktail US11, and a specialty coffee US4, a shore excursion credit (worth at least US100), and the Surf Wi−Fi package (worth AU45 per day). When you add it all up, for anyone who enjoys a few drinks, wants to try a specialty restaurant, and stay connected, the “Have It All” package offers significant savings and, just as importantly, budget predictability.
After you complete your first cruise with Holland America, you are automatically enrolled in their loyalty program, the Mariner Society. You earn “Cruise Day” credits for each day you sail, and you can accelerate your progress by booking a suite (which earns double credits) or through your onboard spending (you earn one bonus credit for every US$300 spent).85 The benefits become increasingly valuable as you move up the tiers, offering real savings and enhanced convenienc, especially for those who enjoy longer voyages.
| Tier | Cruise Days Needed | Most Valuable Perks for Seniors |
| Star Mariner | 1 cruise | Early booking bonus (up to US$400 onboard credit), Mariner Society Welcome Lunch. |
| 2-Star Mariner | 30 days | All of the above, plus a complimentary ship photo and 10% off select logo clothing. |
| 3-Star Mariner | 75 days | All of the above, plus 25% off specialty dining, wine packages, and mini-bar purchases. |
| 4-Star Mariner | 200 days | All of the above, plus discounts increase to 50% off specialty dining, etc. Complimentary laundry and pressing service. Priority check-in, tendering, and disembarkation. |
| 5-Star Mariner | 500 days | All of the above, plus two complimentary specialty dinners, a complimentary Thermal Suite day pass, and up to US$30 internet credit.86 |
The key to maximising these benefits is, of course, to sail with Holland America consistently. The perks at the 4-Star and 5-Star levels are particularly valuable for senior travellers. The complimentary laundry service on a long voyage is a fantastic convenience, and the significant discounts on specialty dining and priority services for check-in and tendering make the entire cruise experience smoother and more enjoyable.
As Holland America Line says, their experiences are “too good to hurry through”—and we couldn’t agree more. Happy sailing! 2

| Australian Departure Ports |

The atmosphere onboard a Holland America ship can be described as one of relaxed sophistication. It’s a deliberate choice by the cruise line to create an environment that appeals to a mature audience valuing comfort, enrichment, and quality over high-octane thrills. The focus on world-class live music, engaging lectures, and serene relaxation spaces, combined with the notable absence of features like waterslides, cultivates a civilised and engaging community at sea.51 The dress code, which has evolved from “Formal” to the more approachable “Dressy,” reflects this philosophy: it’s about feeling special and elegant without being stuffy or restrictive.14 This thoughtful curation makes for a holiday where you can enjoy a cocktail with live jazz, learn something new about your next port of call, and connect with fellow travellers, all at a wonderfully unhurried pace.
Dining & Cuisine
Entertainment & Enrichment

Activities & Classes
Sea Days vs Port Days
Many ports are also easy to explore independently, with shuttles, taxis, and ride-shares available.
Excursion Style & Pricing: Holland America offers a huge variety of tours in every port, from gentle city highlights and scenic drives to more active adventures like kayaking or hiking.62 Prices can vary widely, from around AU$80 for a simple city orientation tour to AU$300 or more for full-day, immersive experiences like flightseeing in Alaska or a premium winery tour.
Activity Levels: To help you choose an excursion that suits your fitness and mobility, all tours are clearly labelled with an activity level.63
Independent Touring & Shuttles: In many ports, it’s very easy to explore on your own. Holland America may offer a shuttle bus from the cruise terminal to the city centre (sometimes for a fee). Taxis and ride-sharing services are usually readily available at the pier. The ship’s staff at Guest Services are always happy to provide maps and suggestions.
Port Accessibility Challenges: It’s important to be aware that accessibility standards vary greatly around the world. Some ports, especially in historic parts of Europe or on smaller islands, can be challenging with cobblestone streets, steep hills, or many stairs. Tender ports, where the ship anchors offshore and uses small boats (tenders) to get to land, can be particularly difficult for those with mobility issues, as it may not be possible to safely board the tender, especially in choppy seas.50 If mobility is a concern, it’s wise to check your itinerary for tender ports before booking.
Booking & Cancellation Policies: You can book your shore excursions online through the HAL website before your cruise (which is recommended for popular tours that sell out) or at the Shore Excursions desk onboard. A key benefit of booking through the cruise line is the peace of mind it provides. They guarantee that the ship will not leave without you if your tour is delayed, and if the ship has to miss a port for any reason, your excursion will be fully refunded.66
Travel Tip: Reputable Third-Party Tours
While booking through the ship offers the greatest security, you can often find smaller group tours or more specialised experiences with independent operators. For Australian ports, reputable national companies like AAT Kings and Gray Line offer excellent day tours from major cities. For ports around the world, websites like Viator and Shore Excursions Group are popular with experienced cruisers for their wide selection. For tours specifically designed for seniors, Australian companies like Travelrite International and Senior Coach Tours specialise in itineraries with a more relaxed pace.67
If you do book independently, always check reviews and ensure the operator guarantees a return to the ship with plenty of time to spare.
Experience timeless elegance and modern comfort aboard Holland America Line’s fleet.
Holland America’s fleet of 11 ships is divided into four distinct classes, each offering a slightly different experience in size and atmosphere. While all ships provide a premium, uncrowded holiday, understanding these differences is the key to choosing the perfect ship for you. It’s clear the line has a thoughtful strategy: instead of just building bigger, they offer a range of sizes to suit different travel styles, from the amenity-rich new builds to the intimate, destination-focused smaller vessels.27
Pinnacle Class
Ships: Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Koningsdam
Passengers: ~2,660
Key Features & Best For: The newest and largest ships, though still mid-sized by industry standards. They feature the most dining and entertainment options, including the full “Music Walk” with B.B. King’s Blues Club, Rolling Stone Lounge, and Billboard Onboard. Best for: Seniors who want all the modern amenities, love a vibrant live music scene, and appreciate a contemporary feel.27
Signature Class
Ships: Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam
Passengers: ~2,100
Key Features & Best For: A perfect bridge between the largest and smaller ships. They offer many of the modern features of the Pinnacle class but with fewer guests, creating a great balance. They still have the fantastic Music Walk (minus B.B. King’s). Best for: A great all-rounder, blending modern features with a slightly more intimate atmosphere.27
Vista Class
Ships: Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Zuiderdam
Passengers: ~1,900
Key Features & Best For: The heart of the classic HAL experience. These ships are elegant and spacious with a more traditional feel. They have fewer specialty restaurants but still offer plenty of music and activities. Best for: Travellers who appreciate the timeless traditions of cruising and a slightly less crowded ship.27
“R” Class
Ships: Volendam, Zaandam
Passengers: ~1,430
Key Features & Best For: The smallest and most intimate ships in the fleet. Their size allows them to access smaller, more unique ports that larger ships can’t reach. They are often used for longer, more exotic itineraries like Grand Voyages. Best for: Destination-focused travellers who prefer a quiet, club-like atmosphere over a vast array of onboard attractions.27
Inside: The most affordable choice, these cabins have no window. They are perfect for travellers who want to save money for shore excursions or for those who love sleeping in absolute darkness.42
Ocean View: These cabins feature a large picture window that provides natural light and a view of the sea, but it doesn’t open. They offer a great balance of value and scenery.
Verandah (Balcony): This is the most popular category for a reason. Having your own private balcony with a small table and chairs is a wonderful luxury, perfect for enjoying a quiet morning coffee, reading a book in the afternoon sun, or watching the world sail by.38
Suites (Vista, Signature, Neptune, Pinnacle): For those wanting to indulge, suites offer significantly more space, larger balconies, and a host of premium perks. These can include priority check-in and disembarkation, a personal concierge service, and access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge for complimentary snacks and drinks throughout the day.38
Accessible Cabins: Holland America offers a range of specially designed accessible cabins for guests with mobility needs. It is essential to book these well in advance by contacting the cruise line’s Guest Accessibility Department.20 These cabins feature wider doorways to accommodate wheelchairs and scooters, roll-in showers with grab bars and a fold-down seat, lowered closet rods, and more floor space to manoeuvre easily.44
Solo Cabins: A fantastic feature on the three newest Pinnacle-Class ships (Rotterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Koningsdam) is the availability of dedicated solo cabins.21 These are well-designed Ocean View cabins for one, and crucially, they are sold without the usual single supplement, making a solo holiday much more affordable. They are very popular and tend to book out quickly, so be sure to plan ahead.45
Medical Centres: Every ship has an onboard medical centre staffed by licensed doctors and critical care nurses. They are well-equipped to handle most routine medical procedures and emergencies but are not full-service hospitals. Please be aware that services are charged to your onboard account and can be expensive; comprehensive travel insurance is absolutely essential.46
Mobility Aid Storage & Charging: For the safety of all guests and crew, personal mobility aids like scooters and wheelchairs must be stored and charged inside your cabin. They cannot be left in hallways or elevator lobbies, as this can create a safety hazard.43
Elevator Coverage & Deck Accessibility: All ships are equipped with spacious, accessible elevators that have Braille control panels and audible signals. Public rooms and wide companionways are designed to be wheelchair accessible, including the beautiful wraparound teak Promenade Deck, which is perfect for a stroll.49 However, gangways for getting on and off the ship can sometimes be steep depending on the tide. Tendering to shore (using small boats) can also be a challenge, particularly on the older R-Class ships which do not have elevators to the tender platform.50
