Your Ultimate Guide to Aqua Expeditions

Discover Aqua Expeditions: authentic Amazon and Mekong adventures paired with five-star comfort, personalised service, and seamless luxury for the modern senior traveller.

A Warm Welcome to Adventure in Style

For many of us at the Seniors Travel Club, the spirit of adventure doesn’t fade with time; it simply develops a taste for comfort. If you’ve ever dreamt of exploring the untamed wilds of the Amazon or the mystical waterways of the Mekong, but shuddered at the thought of “roughing it,” then Aqua Expeditions might just be the answer to your prayers. This is a cruise line that masterfully blends true, authentic expedition with the kind of five-star luxury you’d expect from a world-class boutique hotel. Imagine waking to the sound of howler monkeys from your designer suite, sipping a gourmet coffee as the morning mist rises off the river, and returning from a day of incredible wildlife spotting to a chilled glass of wine and a meal crafted by a celebrated chef. This is the unique promise of Aqua Expeditions: rugged destinations, refined luxury.1

What truly sets this experience apart, and why we think it’s such a brilliant fit for our members, is the unparalleled level of personal service. On most of their vessels, Aqua Expeditions maintains an incredible one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio, a standard of care that is almost unheard of in the travel world.3 This isn’t just about having someone to bring you a drink; it’s about intuitive, anticipatory service that makes you feel like a treasured guest on a private yacht. The crew knows your name, remembers your preferences, and goes out of their way to ensure every moment of your journey is seamless and special. It’s the ultimate safety net, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the adventure, knowing that every detail is being taken care of.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about planning your own Aqua Expeditions adventure. From booking your flights from Australia and choosing the right season to understanding the day-to-day experience and the real-world accessibility, we’ve got you covered. Let’s find out if this remarkable style of travel is the perfect fit for your next big trip!

Why Seniors Love This River Cruise Line

Aqua Expeditions has a knack for creating experiences that seem tailor-made for the active and discerning senior traveller. It’s about more than just a destination; it’s about how you experience it. The high price point buys not just a luxurious cabin, but a completely seamless and worry-free adventure, eliminating all the logistical hassles that can sometimes take the shine off a big trip. From the moment the staff meet you at the airport until they wave you goodbye, every detail is managed, allowing you to simply relax and immerse yourself in the journey.18

Here are a few of the “high-joy” reasons our members fall in love with this style of travel:

  • Unpack Once, Explore Deeply: Your beautiful suite becomes your floating five-star hotel. There’s no daily packing and unpacking, yet every day you wake up to a new, breathtaking view in the heart of a remote and fascinating destination.
  • Intimacy and Camaraderie: With a maximum of 40 guests, the atmosphere is warm, friendly, and sociable—more like a private house party than a cruise ship.1 You’ll quickly get to know your fellow travellers, sharing stories over dinner and forging new friendships.
  • Unparalleled Personal Service: That 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio is a game-changer. It means the staff have the time and training to anticipate your needs, remember your favourite drink, and add those thoughtful little touches that make a trip truly unforgettable.2
  • Gourmet Dining, Every Meal: For many of us, food is a huge part of the travel experience. Aqua Expeditions takes this to another level, with menus crafted by world-class chefs that showcase the best of local cuisine and ingredients. It’s a genuine culinary highlight.30
  • Adventure with a Safety Net: All excursions are in small skiffs with just 8-10 people and an expert naturalist guide.32 This ensures you’re always safe, you get a close-up view of the action, and you have an expert on hand to answer all your questions.
  • Truly All-Inclusive Comfort: Little things make a big difference. Having your laundry done for you every day, free of charge, is a rare and wonderful perk, especially in the hot, humid climates of the Amazon and Mekong. It means you can pack light and always feel fresh.13

Did You Know?

Aqua Expeditions partners with some of the world’s top culinary talents to design their menus. On the Mekong, your meals are designed by Michelin-starred chef David Thompson, while on the Amazon, celebrated Peruvian chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino crafts a ‘rainforest-to-table’ experience. It’s a foodie’s dream come true, deep in the jungle! 2

Booking & Planning Essentials

Organising a trip of this calibre from Australia requires a bit of forward planning, especially when it comes to flights. Here’s what you need to know.

Getting to Your River Cruise

Aqua Expeditions fares don’t include international flights, so you’ll need to book these separately. This gives you the flexibility to use frequent flyer points, choose your favourite airline, or add a few extra days before or after your cruise to explore.

  • Common Gateways for Aussies:
  • For the Mekong: The easiest gateway is Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) in Vietnam. There are direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne on airlines including Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar, and Vietjet, making it a relatively straightforward journey.35 Singapore (SIN) is also an excellent one-stop hub for connecting flights to Ho Chi Minh City or Phnom Penh.
  • For the Amazon: Your destination is Iquitos (IQT) in Peru, the world’s largest city that cannot be reached by road. This is a significant long-haul journey from Australia, typically involving a flight to a major hub in the Americas (like Los Angeles or Dallas), then a connecting flight to Lima (LIM), and finally a domestic flight to Iquitos. Planning this journey with ample connection time is crucial.37
  • For the Galapagos: You’ll fly from Australia to either Guayaquil (GYE) or Quito (UIO) in Ecuador. From there, you’ll take a domestic flight to Baltra Island (GPS). Aqua Expeditions can assist in booking this domestic leg to ensure seamless transfers to the yacht.9

Travel Tip: Beating Jet Lag

For long-haul flights to South America or even Southeast Asia, we strongly recommend planning to arrive at least two full days before your cruise departs. This gives you time to acclimatise, recover from the flight, and explore your embarkation city at a relaxed pace. The last thing you want is to start your bucket-list adventure feeling exhausted!

Dining Experience

For many travellers, the quality of the food can make or break a holiday. On Aqua Expeditions, the dining is not just a feature; it’s a centrepiece of the entire experience, designed to be as memorable as the destinations themselves.

All-Inclusive Dining

The main dining room operates with a relaxed, open-seating policy for all meals. This encourages a wonderfully social atmosphere, as you can choose to sit with different people each evening to share stories from the day’s adventures.56 The experience is a world away from the vast, impersonal dining halls of large ships.

  • A Focus on Local Cuisine: The menus are a highlight, meticulously designed by world-renowned and even Michelin-starred chefs to reflect the region you’re travelling through.30 On the Amazon, you’ll taste unique fruits and fish sourced sustainably from the rainforest; on the Mekong, the flavours of Vietnam and Cambodia come alive with fresh herbs and spices from the local markets. It’s a true culinary journey.34
  • Included Beverages: To make the experience even more seamless, a selection of excellent South American wines (on the Amazon) and local beers are included with your lunch and dinner, along with all non-alcoholic drinks. There’s no need to worry about signing for every glass or facing a surprise bill at the end of your cruise.12

Special Diets & Preferences

The culinary team is well-equipped to handle special dietary needs, but advance notice is essential.

  • Let Them Know Early: It is vital that you inform the cruise line of any allergies, intolerances, or dietary preferences (such as vegetarian or gluten-free) at the time of booking.
  • Flexibility and Care: Because every dish is made fresh onboard from high-quality ingredients, the chefs have the flexibility to adapt meals easily. The staff are discreet and attentive, and will confirm your needs with you at the start of the cruise to ensure you are well looked after.34
  • Room Service: Formal room service is generally not offered. However, if you are feeling unwell, the crew will happily bring simple fare like broth or toast to your suite.34

You Should Know:

Because these are small, intimate ships, the galleys (kitchens) are also small. This means you won’t find the sprawling buffets or endless choices of a large ocean liner. Instead, the focus is on exceptionally high-quality, curated menus where every dish is a star, prepared with care and precision.

Enrichment & Entertainment

The philosophy onboard is one of enrichment over entertainment. The destination itself is the star of the show, and the onboard program is designed to deepen your understanding and appreciation of it. You won’t find casinos, Broadway-style shows, or bingo nights here.

  • Cultural Immersion: The enrichment is woven into the daily experience. On the Mekong, this might be a mesmerising Apsara dance performance brought onboard one evening, a tradition once reserved for Cambodian royalty.24 In both destinations, you’ll enjoy cooking demonstrations where the chef explains local ingredients, or a class on how to make the perfect Pisco Sour.40
  • Expert-Led Learning: Your naturalist guides are the primary source of enrichment. They are highly educated local experts who are passionate about the region’s ecology, wildlife, and history. They will give informal talks in the lounge in the evenings, recapping the day’s sightings and preparing you for the next day’s adventure.49
  • Low-Key Evenings: After a fantastic dinner, evenings are typically quiet and social. Guests gather in the lounge to chat, enjoy a final drink at the bar, or head to bed early to be well-rested for the next day’s early start. On some nights, the talented crew might form a band and play some local music, which is always a fun and authentic treat.28
  • Library and Quiet Spaces: For those who enjoy a bit of quiet time, the ships feature a cosy library and TV room, perfect for curling up with a book or catching up on your travel journal.44

Travel Tip:

Evenings are quiet and relaxed. We recommend packing a good book, downloading a few movies or shows to your tablet before you leave home, or bringing a deck of cards. It’s the perfect time to unwind and reflect on the day’s incredible adventures.

Health, Medical & Practical

Your health and safety are paramount, especially when travelling to remote destinations. It’s important to have a realistic understanding of the facilities available and to prepare accordingly.

  • Onboard Medical Facilities: The ships are equipped with a small infirmary staffed by a trained paramedic or medical officer.3 This facility is designed for first aid—treating minor ailments, injuries, and stabilising a patient in a more serious emergency. It is not a hospital, and the onboard pharmacy carries only basic medications.59 The operational model is to “stabilise and evacuate,” meaning that in the event of a serious medical issue, the priority is to get you safely to a comprehensive medical facility on land.
  • Prescription Medication: You must bring a full supply of any prescription medications you require, in their original packaging, along with a letter from your doctor. Do not assume you will be able to get prescriptions filled along the way.
  • The Reality of Walking: Be prepared for natural, uneven surfaces. In the Amazon, jungle trails can be muddy and covered in tree roots. In the Mekong, village paths are often unpaved dirt tracks.32  Sturdy, comfortable, and broken-in walking shoes with good grip are absolutely essential.
  • Seasickness: This is very rare on the calm inland waters of the Amazon and Mekong. However, if you are considering one of their ocean voyages in the Galapagos or Indonesia, it’s wise to pack motion sickness medication as a precaution.
  • Elevator Availability: This is a critical point. The majority of Aqua’s ships, including the Aqua Nera, do not have elevators.49 You must be able to comfortably manage stairs to move between the decks for meals, excursions, and to access the observation deck.
  • Laundry Service: A wonderful and practical perk is the complimentary daily laundry service.13 This allows you to pack light, which is a real blessing on long-haul trips, and ensures you always have fresh, clean clothes despite the humid conditions.

Technology & Communication

While one of the great joys of these trips is the chance to disconnect, it’s still good to know what to expect in terms of staying in touch.

  • Wi-Fi Quality and Coverage: Complimentary Wi-Fi is available onboard, and some ships are now equipped with high-speed satellite services like Starlink.12 However, you are travelling in some of the most remote parts of the world. The connection will be intermittent and can drop out entirely. It is generally suitable for sending emails and messages, but not for streaming videos or making video calls.49 Our advice is to download any movies, music, or books you want before you leave Australia.
  • Power Outlets in Cabins: The suites are well-equipped with power points. You can expect both 220V and 110/115V sockets, often with a mix of European and American-style outlets.14 As always, it’s a good idea for Australian travellers to pack a universal travel adapter to be on the safe side.
  • Mobile Phone Coverage: Don’t expect to have a reliable mobile signal. For large stretches of your journey, particularly deep in the Amazon, you will have no service at all.
  • Tech Support: The friendly crew can help you with basic issues like connecting to the Wi-Fi, but there is no dedicated IT officer onboard.

The Social Scene

The small size of an Aqua Expeditions ship creates a unique and intimate social environment that is a highlight for many guests.

  • An Intimate Atmosphere: With so few passengers, you’ll quickly get to know your fellow travellers. This fosters a warm, friendly camaraderie, much like being at a dinner party with interesting new friends.29 If you are a social person, you will love this aspect. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you may find the constant interaction less appealing.
  • Easy Mingling: The open-seating dining policy, small-group excursions, and shared lounge spaces are all designed to encourage social interaction. The crew are also wonderful hosts, adept at making introductions and ensuring everyone feels included, especially solo travellers.28
  • Small Ship Dynamics: The vibe is relaxed, informal, and conversational. People are there because they share a common interest in travel, nature, and culture, so you’ll never be short of something to talk about.
  • Language Onboard: The common language spoken onboard is English. All guides and key crew members are fluent, ensuring clear communication for all guests.12

You Should Know:

On a ship this small, you’ll see the same faces at every meal and on every excursion. If you’re a social traveller, you’ll love the easy camaraderie that develops. If you cherish your privacy, be prepared for a more communal experience than you would find on a large ship.

Popular Itineraries

Aqua Expeditions focuses on in-depth explorations of some of the world’s most incredible waterways. Here are their flagship river itineraries.

Exotic Rivers

  • The Peruvian Amazon (from Iquitos)
    • Itineraries: Choose from 3, 4, or 7-night journeys aboard the Aria Amazon or the newer Aqua Nera.1
    • Season: The experience varies by season. The High Water season (Dec–Apr) is for exploring flooded forests by skiff, while the Low Water season (May–Nov) is for jungle hikes.26
    • Highlights: Your days will be filled with exploring the vast Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, known as the “Jungle of Mirrors.” You’ll go on skiff rides searching for elusive pink river dolphins, three-toed sloths, and countless species of monkeys and birds. Other activities include trying your hand at piranha fishing and visiting remote riverside communities to learn about their way of life.41
    • Senior Suitability: Perfect for active seniors with a passion for nature and wildlife. A good level of mobility is required to get the most out of the daily excursions.
  • The Mekong River (Vietnam & Cambodia)
    • Itineraries: 3, 4, or 7-night sailings on the Aqua Mekong, travelling between Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap.3
    • Season: Best during the dry season (Nov–Apr) for the most pleasant weather.25
    • Highlights: This is a journey through history and culture. You’ll explore floating villages on the vast Tonle Sap Lake, visit serene Buddhist monasteries to receive a traditional blessing, and discover ancient temples. Excursions by local tuk-tuk and bicycle take you into the heart of riverside life, where you can watch artisans weaving silk and mats by hand.24
    • Senior Suitability: An excellent choice for seniors interested in culture, history, and seeing a unique way of life. The excursions are generally less physically demanding than those on the Amazon.

Luxury Ocean Expeditions (A Brief Overview)

It’s worth knowing that Aqua also operates a fleet of stunning ocean-going superyachts for those looking for a different kind of adventure.

  • The Galapagos Islands: Explore Darwin’s living laboratory aboard the ultra-exclusive, 16-guest Aqua Mare. Itineraries focus on up-close wildlife encounters with giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and playful sea lions through guided hikes and snorkelling.11

Indonesia: The 30-guest Aqua Blu explorer yacht sails through the pristine waters of Eastern Indonesia, including Raja Ampat, the Komodo Islands, and the historic Spice Islands. These voyages are a dream for keen snorkelers and divers, focusing on the incredible marine biodiversity of the Coral Triangle.8

Value Analysis

There’s no getting around it: an Aqua Expeditions cruise is a significant financial investment. However, when you break down what’s included, a powerful argument for its value emerges, especially for travellers who prioritise quality and a seamless experience.

  • The True Cost: When comparing the high upfront price to a land-based holiday of similar quality, you must factor in the cost of all-inclusive gourmet meals, premium wines and beers, daily private-style guided tours, all transport, and unique services like complimentary laundry. When viewed this way, the price becomes more comparable to a luxury safari or a high-end, all-inclusive tour package.
  • When the Premium is Worth It: The premium price is justified for travellers who place a high value on exceptional, personalised service. The 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio delivers a level of attention that is almost impossible to find elsewhere and is the cornerstone of the worry-free experience.5 If you want to explore remote places without any of the logistical stress, this is where the value lies.
  • Hidden Costs to Budget For:
    • Gratuities: This is the most significant extra cost. The cruise line’s suggested amounts vary, but you should budget for the higher end to be safe—around US95perperson,perday.[12]Foracoupleona7−nightcruise,thiscouldaddoverAUD2,000 to your final bill.
    • Airfare: The long-haul flights from Australia, particularly the multi-leg journey to Iquitos for the Amazon cruise, will be a substantial part of your total holiday cost.
    • Other Extras: Budget for cocktails and spirits, any spa treatments you might indulge in, and pre- or post-cruise accommodation.

Travel Insurance—A Non-Negotiable Cost: As mentioned, the onboard medical facilities are for stabilisation, not comprehensive treatment. A serious medical issue in a remote location would require medical evacuation, which can be astronomically expensive.63 It is absolutely essential to purchase a top-tier travel insurance policy with a high level of coverage for emergency medical evacuation—we recommend a minimum of $250,000. This is not an area to cut corners.

River Cruise Realities

To make the best decision, it’s important to understand how this style of cruising differs from the more traditional holidays you may have experienced.

  • What’s Different from Ocean Cruising: This is an intimate, destination-focused experience. Expect one main restaurant, not a dozen. The entertainment is a lecture from a naturalist, not a Broadway show. The social scene is small and friendly, not anonymous. The entire focus is on the incredible world outside the ship’s panoramic windows.
  • Physical Fitness (The Real Talk): You don’t need to be a marathon runner, but a good level of baseline fitness and mobility is required. You need to be “boat-agile”—able to step in and out of skiffs with confidence—and “trail-steady”—able to walk for an hour over uneven, unpaved ground. Good balance is more important than raw strength.32
  • Weather and Itinerary Changes: You are travelling in wild, dynamic environments. The itinerary is always subject to change based on weather conditions and, most importantly, river water levels.64 A path might be flooded, or a tributary might be too low to navigate. The crew are experts at adapting, and this flexibility is part of the adventure.
  • Low and High Water Contingencies: The company has well-planned contingencies for seasonal changes. For example, during the Mekong’s low water season when the ship can’t reach Siem Reap via the lake, they provide a complimentary flight extension to ensure you don’t miss out.24
  • Why Seniors Become Devotees: Many of our members who try this style of travel become completely hooked. It offers a perfect blend of intellectual stimulation from the expert guides, gentle physical activity in the great outdoors, warm social connection with like-minded travellers, and the profound comfort of being utterly looked after. It’s a way to experience parts of the world that might have seemed too daunting, in complete safety and style.

Final Verdict

So, is an Aqua Expeditions cruise the right choice for your next adventure? Here is our final assessment to help you decide.

  • Best Suited For: Active, curious, and financially comfortable senior travellers seeking a “soft adventure.” This is a perfect match for nature lovers, passionate foodies, and cultural explorers who prioritise exceptional service, expert guidance, and intimate experiences over the amenities of a large resort. If your idea of a great holiday is learning something new, seeing incredible wildlife, and enjoying a fantastic meal with new friends, you will be in heaven.
  • Not Recommended For: This is not the right trip for anyone with significant mobility limitations, particularly those who rely on a wheelchair or walker for any length of time. It is also not suited for those who enjoy the anonymity, vast entertainment options, and multiple dining venues of a large ocean liner, or for travellers on a tight budget.
  • Stand-Out Features: Three things truly elevate Aqua Expeditions into a class of its own: the incredible 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio that delivers unparalleled personal service; the world-class, regionally-inspired cuisine designed by celebrated chefs; and the small-group, expert-led excursions that take you into the authentic heart of some of the world’s most remote and beautiful places.
  • Overall Value and Recommendation: For the right traveller, this experience represents outstanding value and comes with our highest recommendation. While the price tag is undeniably at the top end of the market, the quality of the all-inclusive experience, the depth of the immersion, and the sheer joy of seamless, stress-free adventure in a remote destination make it worth every cent.

If you’re ready for an adventure that stimulates the mind and nourishes the soul, all while cradling you in absolute comfort, then an Aqua Expeditions voyage isn’t just a holiday—it’s the trip of a lifetime. It’s proof that the spirit of exploration only gets richer with age. So, go on, the river is calling.

The River Cruise Experience

Life aboard an Aqua Expeditions vessel follows a comfortable and engaging rhythm, designed to maximise your experience of the incredible destinations you’re visiting. The focus is firmly on the world outside the ship, with the vessel itself serving as your luxurious and comfortable basecamp.

Checked

The Daily Rhythm: Days often start early to take advantage of the best wildlife viewing opportunities. Expect a gentle wake-up call around 6 am, followed by a light breakfast before the morning excursion.32 You’ll return to the ship for a full lunch and some downtime during the hottest part of the day—perfect for a nap, a swim, or reading a book. The afternoon brings another excursion, followed by cocktails and a debriefing in the lounge before a leisurely dinner.49

Checked

Scenic Cruising: While the ship often repositions during mealtimes or overnight, there are plenty of hours dedicated to slow, scenic cruising. With floor-to-ceiling windows in every suite and comfortable lounges and observation decks, you can simply sit back and watch the magnificent landscapes of the Amazon or Mekong drift by.3

Checked

Excursions by Skiff: The workhorse of your expedition is the skiff—a sturdy, comfortable, 8-10 passenger motorised boat. These allow your expert guide to take you down narrow tributaries, get you close to the riverbanks to spot wildlife, and ferry you to village docks and trailheads. Getting in and out of the skiff is a key part of the daily routine and requires a degree of balance and mobility.32

Checked

Walking Tours and Hikes: In the Amazon during the low-water season, guided jungle walks are a highlight.41 These are taken at a leisurely pace on marked but natural, uneven trails, and typically last for about an hour.32 The guides are brilliant at pointing out tiny frogs, fascinating insects, and medicinal plants you would otherwise miss. The ship provides rubber boots for muddy conditions.49

Checked

Local Encounters: Unlike European river cruises that dock in the centre of cities, port stops here are at remote jungle trailheads or the simple docks of local villages.41 You’ll have opportunities for authentic cultural immersion, such as visiting a local school, seeing how traditional crafts are made, or learning about life in a remote Amazonian community.24

Checked

Evening Docking: At night, the ship will typically anchor in a quiet, secluded spot on the river. Evenings are spent relaxing onboard, enjoying the fine food and wine, and chatting with your fellow passengers. There are no opportunities to step off into a bustling town for a nightcap; the entertainment is the serenity of the jungle or the river around you.49

Shore Excursions

The daily excursions are the heart and soul of an Aqua Expeditions voyage. They are your window into the incredible nature and culture of these remote regions, and they are all designed to be as comfortable and enriching as possible.

Checked

All-Inclusive Adventure: One of the best things about the pricing structure is that all your daily excursions are included.15 There are no optional tours to purchase onboard, so you never have to worry about missing out or facing unexpected costs.

Checked

Pacing and Activity Levels: The excursions are designed to be accessible to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. While there aren’t formal “gentle” or “active” groupings, a typical day will include a mix of activities. Skiff rides are very low-impact, while jungle walks or cycling require more energy. You always have the option to sit out an excursion and relax on the ship if you prefer—it’s your holiday, after all.5

Checked

Intimate Group Sizes: You will explore in a small group of no more than 8-10 guests per expert naturalist guide.32 This is a huge advantage. It means you can get up close to the action, ask plenty of questions, and the guide can tailor the experience to the group’s interests. You won’t be trailing along at the back of a crowd of 40 people, struggling to hear.

Checked

Audio Headsets: Unlike on larger tours, you won’t need audio headsets. The groups are small enough that your guide can speak to you directly, creating a much more personal and conversational experience.

Checked

Equipment Provided: On the Amazon, the ship provides you with waterproof ponchos and rubber boots for jungle walks.49 On the Mekong and Amazon, bicycles and kayaks are available for certain excursions, allowing you to explore in different ways.3

Senior Saver:

With Aqua Expeditions, there’s no need to worry about upgrading your tours. Because every excursion is already a small-group, expert-led experience, you’re getting the ‘premium’ version every time, and it’s all included in your fare. This represents fantastic value and removes any decision-making stress.

Ships & Accommodation

Forget any preconceived notions of a typical cruise ship. Aqua Expeditions’ vessels are more like floating, architecturally designed boutique hotels, created to provide an intimate and stylish base for your adventures.3

Ship Design & Layout

The ships are custom-built to navigate their specific environments. The river ships are long and low to pass under bridges, while the ocean yachts are built for stability and range.3 A typical river vessel like the

Aqua Mekong has three decks, while an ocean yacht like Aqua Blu has five.3

Public spaces are designed to be social hubs. You’ll find a main indoor lounge and bar for pre-dinner drinks, an elegant dining room, and an observation or sun deck, often with a small plunge pool or jacuzzi—perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring.3

For seniors, the best cabin location is often on the same deck as the main lounge and dining room to minimise the use of stairs. On the Aqua Mekong, for example, this would be the Second Deck.3 It’s also wise to request a suite away from the galley or engine areas if you’re a light sleeper.

Cabin Categories

Aqua Expeditions offers all-suite accommodation, which is a key part of their luxury promise. The suites are exceptionally spacious for river vessels, typically measuring around 30 square metres (322 square feet), which is much larger than the industry standard.3

Checked

Windows and Balconies: Every suite features a massive, floor-to-ceiling panoramic window, so you’ll never miss a moment of the passing scenery, even from your bed.3 On some ships, like the
Aqua Mekong, you can choose between a suite with a private balcony or one without. While a balcony is a lovely extra, the air-conditioned comfort of your suite is often more appealing in the humid jungle climate.

Checked

Storage and Packing: With generous suite sizes comes ample storage space. However, we still recommend packing soft-sided luggage that can be easily stowed under the bed. And remember, with the complimentary daily laundry service, you can pack significantly lighter than you would for a typical holiday.13

Checked

Solo Travellers: Aqua is an excellent choice for those travelling solo. The standard single supplement is a very reasonable 25%, and the line frequently runs special offers that waive this supplement entirely on select dates and in specific suites. Combined with the friendly, social atmosphere, it’s a welcoming environment for individual adventurers.21

Accessibility Reality Check

This is a crucial section, and we need to be very clear and honest. Based on the nature of expedition travel and the design of these specialised vessels, Aqua Expeditions cruises are not suitable for travellers who are dependent on a wheelchair or have significant mobility impairments.

While major ocean cruise lines have made fantastic strides in accessibility, the world of small-ship expedition cruising presents unique challenges. Aqua Expeditions does not publish detailed accessibility information on their website, which in itself is an indication that they do not cater to this market. The entire experience is designed for an active, mobile guest.

Checked

Key Challenges to Consider:

  • Gangways: The ramps used to get on and off the ship can be narrow and steep, often with just a rope for a handrail. Their angle changes dramatically depending on the river level and the dock.47
  • No Lifts to All Decks: The ships are small and generally do not have elevators. The Aqua Nera, for instance, has no lift at all.49 Even on ships that do, they often don’t provide access to the top sun deck, which is only reachable by stairs.47
  • Getting into Skiffs: Daily excursions require you to step down from the ship’s launchpad into a small, motorised boat (a skiff) that will be moving with the current. This requires good balance and a degree of agility.32
  • Terrain Ashore: Once you leave the ship, you’ll be walking on uneven jungle paths, muddy riverbanks, or through villages with unpaved tracks. There are no paved footpaths in these remote areas.32

Who Shouldn’t Book: We would advise anyone who cannot comfortably walk up and down a full flight of stairs, walk for up to an hour on uneven ground, or get in and out of a small boat with only minimal assistance to strongly reconsider this type of cruise.

Great Alternatives: For members with mobility concerns who still crave a cruising holiday, modern ocean liners from lines like Celebrity Cruises or Royal Caribbean offer an outstanding and truly accessible experience, with specially designed cabins, wide corridors, and accessible shore excursion options.52
