The Savvy Senior’s Guide to Virgin Voyages

The Savvy Senior’s Guide to Virgin Voyages

Why Virgin Voyages is a surprisingly perfect fit for 60+ travellers seeking great food, adult-only serenity, and a fresh, modern cruise experience.

What's All the Fuss About?

If you’ve been keeping an ear to the ground in the world of travel, you’ve likely heard the buzz around Virgin Voyages. It’s the new kid on the block in the cruising world, and it’s doing things a little differently. Forget what you think you know about cruising—the formal nights, the crowded buffets, the kids running down the hallways. Virgin has thrown that rulebook overboard to create something fresh, modern, and exclusively for adults.

This guide has been put together especially for our Seniors Travel Club members to give you the full story on Virgin Voyages. We’ll dive deep into what makes it tick, who it’s for, and whether it’s the right fit for your next grand adventure on the high seas.

At its heart, Virgin Voyages is built on a philosophy they call “Adult-by-Design”.1 This isn’t just a simple “no kids allowed” rule; it’s the very foundation of the entire experience. Every single aspect of their ships, from the restaurants to the entertainment and wellness offerings, has been crafted with an adult audience in mind.3 The result is a sophisticated, relaxed, and kid-free sanctuary at sea—a perfect escape for those of us who’ve done the family holidays and are now looking for a holiday that’s all about us.5 From the moment you step on board, you’re not a “passenger”; you’re a “Sailor,” a small but significant change in language that sets the tone for a more adventurous and communal journey.6

Why Our 60+ Members Love This Cruise Line

When we dig past the marketing, the “high-joy” factors for mature travellers are crystal clear and incredibly appealing.

  • The “No Kids” Serenity: This is the number one reason, hands down. The guarantee of an 18+ environment means you can truly relax.2 The peace, the sophisticated conversation, and the freedom from family-centric programming are paramount.7
  • Foodie Heaven (With No Extra Bill): Forget the old model of paying extra for the “good” restaurants. On Virgin, all 20+ eateries are specialty-level, and all are included in your fare.9 From a premium steakhouse (The Wake) to upscale Mexican (Pink Agave), it’s a food-lover’s dream.4
  • No Buffets, No Queues: They have completely ditched the traditional cruise buffet.30 Instead, “The Galley” food hall offers fresh, made-to-order dishes from various stations.29 This means better quality, less waste, and no queuing with hundreds of people.
  • Genuine, Friendly Service: That high crew-to-passenger ratio (around 1:2.4) 11 isn’t just a number. It translates directly into staff who are consistently described as “outstanding” 4, friendly, and wonderfully inclusive.6
  • Freedom from Formality: Hate packing a tuxedo or a separate wardrobe of formal gowns? Good news. There are no formal nights and no enforced dress codes.19 The ethos is about being comfortable and stylish your way.
  • Fantastic for Solo Travellers: If you’re travelling on your own, Virgin welcomes you. They offer specific “Solo Insider” cabins to avoid the dreaded single supplement 26, often run deals with reduced supplements 27, and host organised events to help you meet other people if you wish.28
  • Transparent Value (Mostly…): Your fare includes all your food, essential drinks (soda, water, basic coffee/tea) 33, all group fitness classes 34, and Wi-Fi.10 This makes budgeting simpler… though, as we’ll see, recent changes to gratuities have unfortunately complicated this simple promise.21

Did You Know?

Virgin’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, gets her name from one of the earliest planes to fly for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic airline.12 It’s a nod to the company’s “rock and roll” British heritage and its history of shaking up industries.

Booking & Planning Essentials

This is where you need to be savvy. Booking a Virgin Voyage used to be incredibly simple, but recent changes have made it far more complex. The original “simple and inclusive” promise has been clouded by new fare structures and unbundled charges.35 This new model is designed to make their lead-in prices look more competitive, but it creates new traps for the unwary. Here’s how you navigate them.

Best Times to Book

  • Wave Season (Jan-Mar): Like most cruise lines, this is when you’ll find the biggest promotions. Virgin often includes a free “Bar Tab” (their name for a drinks credit) or significant discounts on the second sailor’s fare.36
  • Advance Booking: For popular itineraries like the Greek Isles or for specific cabins, booking further out generally locks in the best price and your preferred cabin choice.37
  • Last-Minute Deals: Virgin does offer these 38, but they are best suited to flexible travellers who live near the departure port. For us in Australia, planning a major fly-cruise to Europe or the Caribbean, this is rarely a practical or cost-effective option.
  • Shoulder Seasons: For the Mediterranean, sailing in May/June or September/October is the “sweet spot.” You’ll avoid the crushing summer heat and the biggest crowds, making for a much more pleasant holiday.

Getting the Best Value

This is now the most complex part of booking. Pay close attention to these new policies to avoid a nasty surprise on your onboard account.

Understanding the New “VoyageFair Choices” (For Bookings after 7 October 2025)

You Should Know: The New Fares: Why ‘Base’ is a Bad Bet

Virgin has moved to an airline-style fare system, and it’s a critical change.39

  • Base Fare: This is the cheap, “basic economy” option. We do not recommend it. It’s non-refundable, you get no choice of cabin location (you could end up under the noisy pool deck), and you get the slowest “Basic” Wi-Fi, which isn’t good for much.39
  • Essential Fare: This is the “classic” Virgin experience and the minimum we’d recommend. You get a better “Classic” Wi-Fi package and, most importantly, some flexibility to change your dates if needed.39
  • Premium Fare: This is the “business class” option. It includes the best “Premium” Wi-Fi (for streaming and video calls), an earlier 60-day booking window for restaurants (a big plus!), and an included Bar Tab (drinks credit).39

The New Gratuity Policy (This is a BIG one)

For years, one of Virgin’s biggest selling points was “Tips Included”.9 For new bookings made from 7 October 2025, this is NO LONGER THE CASE.21

  • Gratuities (or “Crew Appreciation”) are now a separate, mandatory line item, just like on other cruise lines.35
  • The Cost: You can pre-pay for $20 USD per person, per day.
  • If you wait to pay onboard, it will cost you $22 USD per person, per day.21
  • What this means for your budget: For a couple on a 10-night Mediterranean cruise, this adds $400 USD (approx. $600 AUD) to your total holiday cost. You must factor this in when comparing prices.

Travel Agent vs. Direct Booking

  • Booking direct with Virgin on their website is very easy.37
  • However, a good travel agent (Virgin calls them “First Mates”) 35 can be invaluable. They are across all the complex new fare tiers and promotions. Crucially, they often have access to extra perks 37, like bonus “Sailor Loot” (onboard credit), that you can’t get by booking direct.

Travel Tip: How to Pick a Quiet Cabin

The “Lady Ships” are well-designed, but sound travels. For guaranteed peace, you need to be strategic.

  • Book a “sandwich” cabin: This is the golden rule. Choose a room that has other cabins directly above and below it.42
  • Avoid Deck 14: This deck is directly under the pool, sun loungers, and, worst of all, The Galley. You will hear chairs scraping and carts rolling from the crack of dawn.
  • Be wary of Deck 8: This deck is directly above the main entertainment and restaurant promenade (Decks 6 & 7). You may get the “thump-thump” of bass bleed from the nightclub late at night.
  • Go Aft (to the rear): The aft (rear) elevators and hallways are much quieter and less busy than the central ones.43 Decks 9, 10, or 11 in the aft (Z-side) are often the quietest, most peaceful spots on the ship.

Pre & Post Cruise Options

  • Virgin offers “Fly-Cruise” deals and hotel packages that you can book through them, which can simplify planning.44
  • Since a return to Australia is not on the cards (see Section 15), all future bookings for us will be “fly-cruise” holidays.
  • Our top tip: We recommend always flying in at least one day before your cruise departs.44 This is especially true when travelling as far as Miami or Athens. It completely eliminates the stress of a flight delay or lost baggage ruining the start of your holiday.

Enrichment & Relaxation

Life on Board: Enrichment & Relaxation

This is perhaps Virgin’s biggest departure from traditional senior cruising. They have actively replaced classic enrichment, like lectures and craft classes, with social and wellness activities. This is a critical point of difference that you must know.

Activities & “Enrichment”

Virgin’s “enrichment” is not academic. You will not find guest lecturers on art history, politics, or the local destinations.65

The focus is squarely on:

  • Fitness: A huge range of included group classes like yoga, spin, and even 80s-themed aerobics (a hilarious, sweaty good time).68
  • Social Games: Trivia is a big deal, but it’s “raucous” and modern (think “Risky Quizness”).71 Winners get free drinks, not keychains.71
  • Modern Shows: Instead of Broadway revues, you get edgy, immersive, modern productions.8 These are often held in flexible spaces and include acrobatic shows, spellbinding cabaret, and interactive game shows like “The Miss Behave Show”.62

Finding Your Quiet Corner (No Library!)

You Should Know: There is No Library

This is a key fact that surprises many traditional cruisers. There is no dedicated library or quiet reading room on board any of the ships.58

So, if you’re a bookworm, where do you go for some peace and quiet?

Travel Tip: Where to Read a Book in Peace

  • The Perch (Deck 17): A secluded, open-air deck at the very top-back of the ship.57
  • Sip Lounge (Deck 7): The ship’s champagne bar. It is often “deserted” during the day and wonderfully quiet and elegant.58
  • The Dock (Deck 7 Aft): Our personal favourite. This is a wonderful, shaded outdoor lounge at the ship’s rear, filled with comfy daybeds. It’s often very peaceful.57
  • Loungers on Deck 7: There are quiet loungers tucked away in nooks between the lifeboats.57

Card Rooms & Casino

You Should Know: There is No Bridge or Card Room

Another major departure from tradition. There is no dedicated room for bridge, mahjong, or other traditional card games.75 While you can, of course, find a table and play, there is no organised program for it.

The focus is entirely on the Casino (Deck 6).76 It’s a large, modern casino with a mix of traditional and new slot machines, blackjack, craps, and roulette.76 For serious poker players, they also have a dedicated WPT at Sea Poker Room.77

The Dining Experience (Hint: No Buffets!)

The Innovative Dining Model

This is Virgin’s crown jewel and, in our opinion, the best dining model at sea. They have completely eliminated three mainstays of old-school cruising 9:

  1. No Buffets: Gone.30
  2. No Main Dining Room (MDR): Gone.
  3. No Set Seating Times: Gone.

The philosophy is that all food is “made-to-order”.10 This dramatically reduces waste and massively increases the quality and freshness. You dine when you want, where you want, with whomever you want. Reservations for the main restaurants are made via the Virgin Voyages app.44

A note on technology: This app-centric model can be a barrier for less tech-savvy seniors. While you can book by visiting the restaurant or Sailor Services 80, the app is the primary method. We recommend getting comfortable with it before you sail, or just popping by the Sailor Services desk on Deck 5 for help.

The Galley: The “Anti-Buffet”

Instead of a buffet, you have “The Galley”.29

  • The Concept: It’s a chic, upscale “food hall”.30 You don’t serve yourself from communal troughs; you find a table, and a server takes your order from any of the different “shops.” Or, you can walk up and order yourself.
  • The Stations: The variety is fantastic. There’s a 24-hour American diner 81, a taco shack 31, a sushi bar with bento boxes 81, a noodle bar 31, a burger joint, a dedicated salad bar, and a bakery.31
  • The Experience: This is the perfect solution for a quick, casual breakfast or lunch. It has all the variety of a buffet but with the quality and service of a sit-down restaurant.4

The (Included!) Specialty Restaurants

This is where Virgin truly shines. All 6+ specialty restaurants are 100% included in your fare.10 You can eat at the steakhouse every night if you want to (and can get a booking!).78

  • The Wake: The signature steak and seafood restaurant.29 It’s a glamorous, Mad Men-style room with stunning aft-facing views. A “must-do” for both dinner and their fantastic brunch.4
  • Pink Agave: An elevated, “foodie” Mexican restaurant.29 This focuses on complex, Mexico City-style dishes, not just tacos and burritos.83
  • Extra Virgin: A high-end, rustic Italian restaurant. Popular, comforting, and delicious.78
  • Gunbae: A lively Korean BBQ. This is a very social event. You are seated at a table with other people (in groups of 6) and the staff lead you in a fun (and loud) Korean drinking game.78 It’s great fun, but perhaps not the place for a quiet, intimate dinner for two.85
  • Test Kitchen: An experimental, laboratory-style restaurant.78 It’s a set 6-course “experience” where the menu is just a list of core ingredients (e.g., “Mushroom, Egg, Beef”).4 It’s a must for adventurous eaters!.85
  • Razzle Dazzle: Originally the “veggie-forward” restaurant, it now serves creative, modern dishes for all tastes (including great meat dishes), plus an all-day brunch menu.4

Your Guide to Health, Safety & Accessibility

This section consolidates the key health and mobility points, which are non-negotiable for ensuring a safe and comfortable trip. The key theme is “great facilities, but you must be prepared.”

The Medical Centre & Onboard Health

  • Capabilities: The onboard Medical Centre (Deck 4) is a proper, well-equipped clinic.50 It can handle emergencies, test for viruses (like COVID), and prescribe a limited range of common medications.50
  • The Cost (It’s Not Bulk-Billed): Seeing the ship’s doctor is very expensive. Prices are in USD and are not covered by Medicare.51
    • Nurse Consult: ~$45 USD
    • General Visit (Doctor): ~$95 USD 51
    • Complex Visit: ~$180 – $300 USD 51
  • The Implication: This is not a substitute for your local GP. It is for urgent care only.
You Should Know: Travel Insurance is NOT Optional
Because of these high medical costs, comprehensive travel insurance is 100% essential.105

    • Your policy must specifically cover cruising.
    • It must have high cover for emergency medical expenses (we recommend at least $100,000).106
    • It must have high cover for medical evacuation at sea.105 A helicopter evacuation can cost a fortune.106
    • Warning: Virgin’s own “Voyage Protection” plan offers very low limits (e.g., only $10k-$25k for medical/evacuation).106 We strongly recommend buying a separate, comprehensive policy from a dedicated Australian insurer.

Medications & Seasickness

  • Prescription Medications:
    • You must pack all required medications in your carry-on bag.50 Never put them in your checked luggage.
    • It is best practice to bring a letter from your doctor and a copy of your prescription, especially for any liquids over 100ml or controlled drugs.108
  • Seasickness:
    • The ship’s medical centre can provide remedies 50 or even a very effective injection if you are quite unwell.109
    • However, it’s much cheaper and easier to pack your own (Kwells, ginger tablets, etc.) from your chemist at home.110

Accessibility & Mobility (The Final Word)

  • Scooter/Wheelchair Policy: To re-confirm this vital point: You must book a Fully Accessible Cabin if you have a non-collapsible scooter. It must be stored and charged in your cabin.47
  • Pool Accessibility: To re-confirm: The main pool is not easily accessible for anyone with mobility challenges due to its high wall and no steps.4 However, pool lifts are available, and you can ask the crew for assistance.49

Wellness, Spa & Fitness

Fitness (It’s Included!)

This is a real standout feature of Virgin Voyages. The gym (called “B-Complex”) is huge, state-of-the-art, and has fantastic ocean views.70

Best of all, all group fitness classes are included in your fare.34 This is a huge value-add, as other lines charge $20+ for these.

Classes include:

  • Spin classes (in a dedicated, dark-room studio)
  • Yoga (often held on the top deck at sunrise)
  • HIIT (High-Intensity) classes
  • Barre and Bungee classes 69
  • An 80s-themed aerobics workout (complete with sweatbands!) 68
There’s also an outdoor running track (The Runway) that loops above the ship.73

Redemption Spa & The Thermal Suite

The “Redemption Spa” is the onboard spa, and it’s a stunning, cave-like sanctuary.93

  • The Thermal Suite: This is the spa’s “hydrotherapy” area. Access is not included (unless you’re a top-tier “Mega RockStar” suite guest).70
  • What’s Inside: It’s a journey of hot and cold. It includes a mud room, a salt room (halotherapy), a sauna, a steam room, hot and cold plunge pools, and heated marble benches to lie on.93
  • The Cost: You buy a “pass,” and prices vary by demand and ship. A 3-hour pass is the standard.93
    • 3-Hour Pass (Port Day): ~$59 USD
    • 3-Hour Pass (Sea Day): ~$79 USD
    • Full Voyage Pass (7-day): ~$378 USD

Travel Tip: Spa on a Port Day

The Thermal Suite is significantly cheaper and less crowded on days when the ship is in port.93 If you’re having a quiet day or coming back early, this is the absolute best and most relaxing time to go.

The Sailing Club: Cashing In on Loyalty

in the industry for experienced cruisers.

Program Tiers & Perks

The program is simple and based on the number of voyages you’ve completed.111

  • Sailing Club Member (After 1 sail): You’re in the club and get access to special members-only offers.112
  • Blue Extras (After 2 sails): This is where it gets good. On your 3rd and 4th sails, you get 112:
  • A free bag of laundry (1 per cabin).
    • A free specialty coffee per day.
    • An exclusive cocktail event.
  • Deep Blue Extras (After 4 sails): This is the top tier. On your 5th sail and beyond, you get all the “Blue Extras” perks, PLUS 112:
    • A $100 USD free Bar Tab.
    • Unlimited Premium Wi-Fi (the good stuff, for streaming).
    • Priority boarding.
    • Two free specialty coffees per day.
    • More free laundry (2 pressed items, 1 specialty clean, 1 bag).

The Status Match (Don’t Miss This!)

Senior Saver: Match Your Status From Other Cruise Lines

  • What it is: For a limited time, Virgin will match your loyalty status from other cruise lines (like Princess Captain’s Circle, Celebrity Captain’s Club, Royal Caribbean’s Crown & Anchor, and P&O’s Peninsular Club).113
  • How it works: You book your first cruise, then fill out a simple form on their website to prove your status on the other line.113
  • The Perk: You will be fast-tracked to “Blue Extras” status and get all those perks (including the free bag of laundry!) on your very first voyage.112
  • This is Virgin’s way of acknowledging that their target audience are experienced cruisers. It immediately rewards you for your loyalty elsewhere and is a huge, tangible value-add.

Sample Itineraries (The Aussie Edition)

This is the section that hits closest to home, and we need to be direct and honest about the past, and the future.

The Aussie Season That Was (2023-24)

  • Resilient Lady made a huge splash when she was based in Melbourne (and later Sydney) for our summer season.18
  • The itineraries were heavily focused on Tasmania and New Zealand.18
  • Example 1: “Tassie & Melbourne” (4-5 nights): These were popular short trips, typically round-trip from Melbourne with stops in Hobart and Burnie.115
  • Example 2: “Australia & NZ” (10-12 nights): These were the longer, one-way voyages between Melbourne/Sydney and Auckland, visiting stunning locations like Hobart, Dunedin, and the NZ Fjords.17

The Future: Is Virgin Coming Back to Australia?

You Should Know: Don’t Wait for Virgin to Return to Australia

  • The Honest Truth: The 2023-24 Australian season was not considered a success for Virgin.119
  • The Reason Why: Bookings were reportedly soft.119 They seem to have misjudged the local market. As one Aussie cruiser wisely noted, “Many of us from southern Australia prefer to head north to holiday”.119 Sailing from Melbourne to (a cooler) Tasmania in summer wasn’t the draw they hoped it would be.
  • The Verdict: With only four ships in their fleet, Virgin will prioritise the highly profitable and established Caribbean and Mediterranean routes.119 There are no plans for a return to Australia in the 2025, 2026, or 2027 schedules.119
  • Our Recommendation: You must treat Virgin Voyages as a “fly-cruise” destination. The real, quintessential Virgin experience is found on their 7-night Greek Isles sailings 14 or their 4-7 night cruises from Miami.15 This guide is here to tell you: it’s worth the flight.

Our Final Verdict: Is Virgin Voyages for You?

So, after all that, what’s the final word for a savvy 60+ Australian traveller?

Virgin Voyages is PERFECT for you if…

  • …You are a “foodie” who dreams of high-end, creative, kid-free dining without getting a massive bill at the end of every meal.
  • …You are a solo traveller. The “Solo Insider” cabins and organised social events are genuinely the best in the business.27
  • …You are “young at heart” 2 and love the idea of a sophisticated, stylish, 100% adult-only resort atmosphere.7
  • …You hate formal nights, buffets, and being told you have to eat at 6 pm on the dot.
  • …You have loyalty status on another cruise line (that “Status Match” perk is just too good to pass up!).113

You Might Want to Reconsider if…

  • …You are a very traditional cruiser. The lack of a library 58, a bridge/card room 75, and academic-style daytime lectures 67 will be a major disappointment.
  • …You have significant mobility issues and your heart is set on using the main pool (that high wall is a real problem).4
  • …You are on a very strict budget. Virgin is a premium brand, and the new mandatory gratuity charge 21 adds a significant extra cost that didn’t exist before.
  • …You prefer a very quiet, conservative atmosphere. The (entirely optional) cheeky humour 6, drag shows 59, and nightclub music 8 might not be your cup of tea.

The Overall Value & Recommendation

Our Rating: 4/5 Stars

Virgin Voyages offers a phenomenal product. The food is, without question, the best at sea in its price bracket. The service is outstanding, and the ships are stunning. The “no kids” promise is, for many, priceless.

It has lost a star in our books purely because of the new, complex fare structures and the re-introduction of mandatory, extra gratuities.21 This move undermines the simple, “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” value that was once their greatest strength.9

Our final advice: If you are a “young at heart” senior who values freedom, style, and incredible food, we say go for it. Just be sure to budget for the new extra charges, use the “Status Match” program, and book that fly-cruise to Europe or the Caribbean.

It’s a truly different and refreshing way to holiday. Go on, “Set Sail the Virgin Way!”

Life on Board: The Vibe & What to Wear

A chic, boutique-hotel vibe with friendly guests, no dress codes, optional themed nights, relaxed days, lively evenings, and total freedom to dress and enjoy as you like.

Checked

Onboard Atmosphere: “Young at Heart”

This is the follow-up to our earlier point about the age myth. The “vibe” is not a 24/7, thumping party. It’s better described as a “boutique hotel at sea”.56

  • By Day: It’s relaxed, chic, and quiet. You’ll find people reading quietly in the shaded beds at The Dock 57, taking a yoga class, or sipping champagne in the Sip lounge.58
  • By Night: The ship comes alive. There’s music in the central atrium, fantastic shows, and an energetic buzz.6 But if you’re “not into partying till 2 am,” you can just… go to bed.7 You are free to choose your own adventure.
  • The crew and fellow passengers are known for being exceptionally friendly, open, and inclusive.6
  • An Honest Word: A very conservative traveller might be put off by the “cheeky” humour (e.g., the ice cream shop is called “Lick Me Till… Ice Cream”) 6 or the (entirely optional) drag shows.59 If you are open-minded and have a sense of humour, you’ll love it.7
Checked

The “No Dress Code” Dress Code

This is a massive relief for many of our members. There are NO formal nights.19

  • You are encouraged to “wear what you’re comfortable in”.60
  • People do dress up for dinner, but in their own style. Think “stylish night out in Melbourne or Sydney” not “penguin suit and ballgown.”
  • If you want to wear smart jeans to the steakhouse, you can. If you want to wear a cocktail dress, you can. The freedom is the entire point.19
Checked

What About Themed Nights?

These are entirely optional, “a bit of fun” events. You won’t feel left out if you don’t participate.

  • Scarlet Night: This is the signature event on every cruise.61 The whole ship is bathed in red light. Everyone is encouraged to wear “a splash of red” 63– this can be anything from a red tie, scarf, or shirt to a full-on red sequin gown.60 It’s a ship-wide party that culminates in a big dance party around the pool.62
  • PJ Party: Exactly what it sounds like. It’s a casual, comfy party where you can wear your pyjamas (from cosy flannelette to a silk set) in the main atrium.19

Going Ashore: "Shore Things"

Small-group, authentic excursions with clear activity info; book early, and choose Virgin’s tours for the peace-of-mind guarantee that the ship will wait if delays occur.

Checked

Excursion Types

Virgin calls their shore excursions “Shore Things,” and they are a bit different from the norm.97

  • The Philosophy: They actively avoid the “stock standard, 50-person big bus” tours.98
  • The Focus: They aim for more authentic, small-group experiences that connect you with locals.99 Think small-group food tours, cultural deep-dives, and “off-the-beaten-path” adventures rather than just a “follow the flag” tour.
  • Activity Levels: While they don’t explicitly label them “gentle/moderate” 99, the descriptions in the app are very clear about the amount of walking, stairs, or physical requirements for each tour.
Checked

Booking Tips (Ship vs. Independent)

  • You can book “Shore Things” in the Virgin app long before you sail.79 We recommend booking early, as the most popular small-group tours sell out, and prices often increase once you’re on board.100
  • You are always free to explore ports on your own or book with a third-party (like Viator).97

You Should Know: “The ‘Ship Won’t Wait’ Rule”

For the 60+ traveller, peace of mind is often worth more than saving a few dollars.

  • The Risk (Independent): If you book your own tour and your bus gets a flat tyre or traffic is bad, and you’re late returning… the ship will leave without you.102
  • The Guarantee (Virgin): If you book a “Shore Thing” through Virgin and their tour is delayed for any reason, the ship will wait for you.102
  • Our Advice: For any port where the main attractions are far from the ship (like Civitavecchia for Rome, or Livorno for Florence), this guarantee is essential.103

Ships & Accommodation

A simple four-ship fleet with identical layouts, balcony-heavy cabins, excellent accessible rooms, but some mobility hurdles—plus mid-size comfort and solid onboard facilities.

Fleet Overview

Checked

The “Lady Ships”: The fleet is wonderfully simple. It consists of four identical sister ships: Scarlet Lady (2020), Valiant Lady (2021), Resilient Lady (2023), and Brilliant Lady (2025).13

Checked

The “Goldilocks” Size: They are all mid-size, holding approximately 2,770 passengers.11 This is a huge plus. They are big enough to have lots of amazing dining and entertainment options, but small enough to never feel overwhelmingly crowded like a 6,000-passenger mega-ship.

Checked

Best Ship for Seniors: Because they are identical, the “best” ship is simply the one sailing the itinerary you want to take.14 The onboard experience, restaurants, cabins, and layouts are the same across the fleet.

Virgin has ditched the traditional, boring names for their own “rockstar” categories. Here’s what they mean.

Checked

Insider: An inside cabin. Good for those who just want a dark, quiet place to sleep and plan to be out and about all day.

  • Solo Insider: A dedicated single-person cabin, which means no single supplement.26 This is a fantastic, affordable option for solo travellers.27
Checked

Sea View: A standard oceanview cabin with a (porthole) window.

Checked

Sea Terrace: This is their standard balcony cabin, and they are the vast majority of rooms onboard (a whopping 86% of all cabins have one).12 They famously feature a red, hand-woven “Seabed” hammock on the balcony, perfect for an afternoon read.

Checked

RockStar Quarters (Suites): These are the suites, ranging from “Seriously Suite” to “Massive Suite”.46 They come with a host of premium perks like early booking access for restaurants, priority boarding, and access to a private, suites-only sundeck called “Richard’s Rooftop.”

Accessibility, Mobility & Ship Facilities

This is a mixed bag, with some features being best-in-class and others being surprisingly difficult.

Checked

Accessibility Cabins (The Gold Standard)

Virgin’s accessible cabins are genuinely excellent and thoughtfully designed.25

  • Ambulatory Accessible Cabins: These are designed for those with limited mobility who might use a cane or walker. They feature extra grab bars in the bathroom and other places to assist with balance.25
  • Fully Accessible Cabins (FAC): These are for full-time wheelchair or scooter users. They are a model of good design, featuring:
    • Wide entry doorways (at least 34 inches / 865 mm).25
    • No step (a flat threshold) into the bathroom.25
    • A full 60-inch (1525 mm) turning radius in both the room and the bathroom.25
    • A full roll-in shower equipped with grab bars and a fold-down shower seat.25
Checked

Mobility Aid Policy (A Critical Hurdle)

Here is where Virgin’s focus on sleek design creates a major financial and logistical hurdle for travellers with mobility scooters.

  • Rule 1: You must store your mobility scooter inside your cabin when not in use.47
  • Rule 2: Unlike some other cruise lines, there are no public storage or charging areas for scooters anywhere on the ship.48
  • The Implication: Because of these two rules, if you have a non-collapsible scooter, you are required to book a Fully Accessible Cabin.47 You cannot just book a regular cabin and hope for the best. This means you are locked into that specific, and often more expensive, cabin category. This is a crucial factor to consider when budgeting.
Checked

Onboard Facilities

  • Medical Centre: There is a full medical centre on Deck 4, run by Vikand Medical Solutions.50 It is equipped for emergencies and can handle common needs, with a limited pharmacy for things like blood pressure or diabetes medication.50 Warning: It is not equipped for long-term, specialized care like dialysis.52
  • Ship Layout: The ship is generally easy to navigate. Elevators have good coverage, and there’s even a “hidden” aft elevator that provides wheelchair access to the top decks.53 Corridors are wide to accommodate 180-degree turns.55
  • BUT… The Main Pool: This is a significant design flaw. As noted by 70+ year-old travellers 4, the main pool is surrounded by a high, 2-foot wall with no steps or railing. This makes it “very difficult for seniors” and anyone with hip or knee issues to get in and out of.4 Pool lifts are available, but you will need to ask the crew for assistance.49
