A Savvy Senior’s Guide to Cunard
A Savvy Senior’s Guide to Cunard

A Savvy Senior’s Guide to Cunard

Cunard offers a refined, elegant, tradition-rich cruise experience perfect for mature travellers—formal nights, enriching lectures, beautiful ships, and a focus on the ship as the destination.

G'day and Welcome to Cunard!

G’day, fellow travellers! When you hear the name “Cunard,” what springs to mind? For most of us, it’s a romantic, black-and-white image of a bygone era. We picture grand ocean liners, gentlemen in top hats, ladies in sweeping gowns, and the golden age of transatlantic crossings.1 It’s a name that means history, tradition, and a certain brand of British elegance. And in today’s world of cruising—where so many ships feel like floating theme parks with waterslides and rock-climbing walls—this link to a more refined, adult-focused experience is precisely what makes Cunard so appealing to our demographic.3

This is a cruise line built for travellers who believe the ship is the destination.5 But that strong link to tradition is also what makes it a very particular choice. Cunard is wonderfully, unashamedly formal. It’s a place that still believes in the “sense of occasion” and the glamour of dressing for dinner.5 It’s for the traveller who would gladly swap a thumping disco for a quiet lounge with a live pianist, or a poolside belly-flop competition for a fascinating lecture by an ex-Governor-General.7 If that sounds like your cup of tea, you might be a “Cunarder” at heart.

In this guide, we’ll take a savvy senior’s look at everything you need to know. We’ll explore the four “Queens” in the fleet, break down the cabin options (especially for mobility), and look at the brilliant onboard activities. Most importantly, we’ll give you the real “insider goss” on the dress codes (and how to opt-out!), the fantastic system for special diets, the tricks for solo travellers, and a clear-eyed look at the real costs for Australians.

Why Our Seniors Club Loves This Cruise Line

Cunard isn’t for everyone, which is exactly why so many of our members adore it. It’s a “filter” for a certain type of traveller, and if you fit the mould, there is simply no better experience.

  • A Civilised, Stately Pace: This is the biggest draw. Life onboard is unhurried. The atmosphere is quiet, polite, and respectful.32 You will never be hounded by high-pressure sales for art auctions or spa treatments.8 The focus is on relaxation and enjoying the journey.
  • Unmatched Enrichment: You will leave this ship smarter than you boarded. The “Cunard Insights” program is world-famous, attracting top-tier speakers from politics, history, science, and the arts.33 On recent Australian voyages, this has included fascinating figures like former Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Olympian Nova Peris OAM.7
  • The Joy of Dressing Up: For many, the chance to “dress to the nines” for a Gala Evening is a highlight, not a chore. It brings back a wonderful sense of occasion, elegance, and romance that has been lost in modern life.8
  • A True Haven for Solo Travellers: Cunard is arguably the best cruise line in the world for sailing solo. With dedicated single-occupancy cabins, hosted coffee mornings, drinks receptions, and hosted dining tables, you are actively welcomed and never made to feel like a “third wheel”.26
  • The Thrill of Tradition: Where else can you enjoy a proper English Afternoon Tea served by white-gloved waiters in a grand ballroom every day? Or take daily ballroom dancing lessons and then waltz to a live orchestra at night?.36 It’s these traditions that make it special.

Did You Know?

Cunard’s connection to arts and culture is over 180 years old. In 1842, none other than Charles Dickens sailed on the Cunard ship Britannia from Liverpool to Boston. He described his (rather bumpy!) journey in his book American Notes.38

Booking & Planning Essentials

Best Times to Book Your Cunard Holiday

Like most lines, the best value is found by booking at the right time.

  • “Wave Season”: The period from January to March is known as “Wave Season” and is when Cunard (and all cruise lines) release their best offers for the year ahead. This is when you’ll see promotions like the “Annual Savings Event” or “Treat yourself, on us” offers.23
  • Look for Inclusions: The best deals for our audience aren’t just a lower price; they are the ones that bundle in the extras. Look for promotions that include “Free Gratuities” 41 or a complimentary drinks package. This is the single best way to cap your costs on a line where extras add up fast.
  • Book Early for Specific Cabins: If you need a specific accessible stateroom or one of the high-demand solo cabins, you must book far in advance—often a year or more. These are the first to sell out.

Getting the Best Value (and Watching the US Dollar!)

  • Cunard Fare vs. Lowest Fare: Cunard offers two main fare types.43 “Our Lowest Fare” might look tempting, but it often comes with a non-refundable deposit and heavy restrictions. For seniors, the standard “Cunard Fare” is often the smarter (and safer) bet. It costs a bit more, but it offers the “flexibility to change your booking,” which is crucial for peace of mind.43
  • The Aussie Cost Trap: This is the biggest financial warning for all Australians. Your Cunard cruise will be billed entirely in US Dollars (USD) onboard.21 This includes every drink, every shop purchase, every shore excursion, and all your daily gratuities. With the exchange rate, a $14 USD cocktail is over $21 AUD, and that “compulsory” $17 USD daily tip is nearly $26 AUD. This “bill shock” at the end of the cruise is the number one complaint from first-time Aussies.21 You must budget for this.
  • Travel Agent vs. Direct: For a simple booking, booking direct is fine. But for a complex, multi-segment World Voyage 44 or a fly-cruise package 5, a savvy Australian travel agent who specialises in Cunard is worth their weight in gold. They understand the airfares, the transfers, and how to navigate the tricky fare structures to get you the best value.

Travel Tip: Choosing Your Cabin Location

On these grand, large ships, location is everything for comfort and stamina. A “great deal” on a cabin at the very front (bow) or back (aft) of the ship can mean a 10-15 minute walk just to get to the central lifts. If you have any mobility concerns, always book a “mid-ship” cabin close to the central lift lobby. It’s the best tip for enjoying your cruise. Also, be wary of cabins directly below the pool deck (scraping chairs) or above the Queens Room (ballroom music), which can be noisy.

Pre & Post Cruise Options

Cunard makes it very easy to extend your holiday. They offer a full range of fly-cruise deals, pre-and-post-cruise hotel packages, and even extended land tours that you can add to the start or end of your voyage.40 This is a great, seamless way to add a few days of recovery in Sydney or your final destination without any stress.

Technology & Communication

Wi-Fi Packages & Speeds

Staying connected is a major extra cost. Cunard’s fleet now uses high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi, which is fast and reliable.89

  • Essential Plan: (For email, browsing, and social media) This costs approx. $20 USD per day for the full voyage.90
  • Premium Plan: (For streaming movies or video calls) This costs approx. $28 USD per day.90
  • You can get a 10% discount by purchasing a full-voyage package on “My Cunard” before you sail.91

The “My Cunard” vs. “My Voyage” App: The #1 Tech Tip

This is the most important tech tip for any Cunarder. The “app” is actually two different things, and one of them is free.92

  • “My Cunard”: This is the website you use at home, before you cruise. You log in to this to book your shore excursions, make speciality dining reservations, check in, and fill out your “onboard needs” questionnaire.86
  • “My Voyage”: This is the onboard portal you use on the ship. It is 100% FREE to use on the ship’s Wi-Fi—you do not need to buy an internet package.92

How to Use the FREE “My Voyage” Portal

This is your key to managing your holiday without spending a cent on Wi-Fi.

  1. Once onboard, put your phone in “Flight Mode” and then turn on only your Wi-Fi.
  2. Connect to the free ship network, “Cunard_Guest_WIFI”.92
  3. Open your phone’s internet browser (like Safari or Chrome) and type in the address: myvoyage.cunard.com.92
  4. From here, you can see the full daily schedule, join a virtual queue for dinner 68, book classes, and—most importantly—check your onboard account and spending in real-time.

Tech Help

If you get stuck, don’t panic. Cunard has dedicated “ConneXions” or “iStudy” rooms with staff who can help you get online and answer your tech questions.73

Health, Medical & Safety

Medical Facility Standards

A full medical centre is located on a lower deck, staffed 24/7 by qualified doctors and nurses.4 They are equipped to handle most common ailments and to stabilise serious emergencies. All services are charged to your onboard account (and they are expensive), so comprehensive travel insurance that covers cruising is not optional.

Prescription Medication Policies

  • Rule 1: You must carry all prescription medications in your hand luggage.58 Do not put them in your checked luggage, as it can be delayed.
  • Rule 2: All medications must be in their original, labelled containers.58 This is a legal requirement, especially for any international flights.

Mobility Equipment & The “Companion” Rule

This is perhaps the most critical section for any traveller with mobility challenges. Cunard’s rules are strict, and they are for your own safety.

  • Storage: As mentioned, all wheelchairs and scooters must be stored inside your stateroom and cannot be left in corridors.58
  • The Big Rule: Cunard crew CANNOT provide personal assistance. They are not permitted to lift guests, push wheelchairs on a regular basis, or assist with personal care (like dressing or using the bathroom).58
  • The “Must Travel with a Companion” Policy: If a guest requires assistance with personal care, lifting, or movement around the ship, Cunard’s booking conditions state they must travel with an able-bodied companion who is fit and able to provide all of that assistance.60 This is not a suggestion; it is a condition of carriage for your own safety and the safety of others.

Seasickness Management

The Queen Mary 2 is a true ocean liner designed to slice through the waves of the North Atlantic, making her one of the most stable ships afloat.46 The other “Queens” are also large, modern, and very stable. However, if you are on a long crossing or hit a patch of bad weather, it’s always possible to feel it. The medical centre can provide injections, and remedies are often available from Guest Services.

Entertainment & Enrichment

This is where Cunard truly shines, offering a sophisticated, intelligent program.

Guest Speaker Quality

The “Cunard Insights” program is the gold standard at sea.33 These aren’t B-list celebrities; they are genuine experts. On Australian sectors, they have featured high-profile speakers like General Sir Peter Cosgrove, historian Peter FitzSimons, and Olympian Nova Peris OAM.7 On transatlantic routes, you’ll find world-renowned authors, scientists, and politicians.

Library & Quiet Spaces

The libraries on Cunard are legendary. On Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, they are stunning, multi-deck, wood-panelled spaces with comfortable leather chairs, a huge selection of books, and a full-time librarian.25 They are magnificent havens of peace for a sea day.

Activities & Classes

  • Dancing: This is a Cunard hallmark. They offer complimentary classes in ballroom, Latin, and line dancing every sea day.66 In the evenings, the Queens Room comes alive with a live orchestra for ballroom dancing.37
  • Dance Hosts: On longer voyages, Cunard features “Gentlemen Dance Hosts”.36 These are charming, professional dancers who are there to ensure solo ladies (and even couples, if the husband has two left feet!) get a chance to waltz.
  • Other Activities: The daily program is packed with classic, gentle pursuits: bridge (often with instructors), trivia, watercolour art classes, and deck games are all part of the daily rhythm.28

The Social Scene

Solo Traveller Meet-Ups

Cunard is a dream for solos. The social life is wonderfully inclusive. On the first few days, there are specific “Solo Travellers’ Coffee Mornings” and “Solo Travellers’ Drinks” receptions hosted by the ship’s team.26 This is an easy, no-pressure way to meet other people in the same boat (literally!).

  • Hosted Tables: If you are travelling alone, you can request to be seated at a “hosted table” for dinner. This means you’ll join a table of other solo travellers, often hosted by one of the ship’s entertainment staff or a dance host.26 It’s a brilliant system.

The Dress Codes Explained

This is the “social contract” of a Cunard cruise, and the number one thing people worry about. Don’t. It’s simpler than you think, and most passengers follow it and love it.93

  • Daytime (Until 6:00 pm): Casual. Anything goes. Shorts, T-shirts, jeans, runners—it’s all perfectly fine anywhere on the ship.6
  • Evening (“Smart Attire”): This is the dress code for most evenings. Think “smart restaurant” or “going to the theatre”.6
    • For Gents: A collared shirt and smart trousers (like chinos or suit trousers). A jacket or blazer is preferred but optional. No jeans, no shorts, no thongs.6
    • For Ladies: A cocktail dress, an elegant skirt and top, or a smart trouser suit.6
  • Evening (“Gala Evening”): This is the “big one”.35 There are at least two on a 7-night cruise, and more on longer voyages.94 This is when you “dress to the nines.”
    • For Gents: A tuxedo (“black tie”) is the norm, but a dark suit and tie is perfectly acceptable and very common.6
    • For Ladies: This is your chance to sparkle! Floor-length gowns, elegant cocktail dresses, or formal trouser suits are all perfect.6

You Should Know: The “Opt-Out” Trick

Don’t love dressing up? That’s completely fine! You won’t be alone.95 The dress code is only enforced in the main dining rooms and some of the formal bars. You are 100% welcome to dress casually and have a relaxed, delicious dinner in the Lido or Kings Court buffet 69 or the Golden Lion Pub. No one will bat an eye.

Costs & Hidden Extras: The Savvy Senior's Guide

This is the most important section for an Australian traveller. Cunard is a premium line, not an all-inclusive one. The base fare 43 is just the beginning. Planning for the “extras” is essential to avoid a nasty shock.

What’s Truly Included:

  • Your stateroom and steward service.
  • All main dining: Britannia Restaurant, Kings Court/Lido Buffet, Golden Lion Pub, and Afternoon Tea.96
  • 24-hour complimentary room service.8
  • All entertainment, lectures, classes, and use of pools/fitness centre.43
  • Basic tea, coffee, water, and juice in the buffet.

The Main Extra Charges (in USD):

  • Hotel & Dining Service Charge (Gratuities): This is the big one. It’s automatically added to your bill, approx. $17–$19 USD (about $26–$29 AUD) per person, per day.19
    • The Maths: For a couple on a 30-night Australian circumnavigation, this adds up to $1,020–$1,140 USD (or $1,560–$1,750 AUD) in tips alone.
  • Onboard Currency (USD): Everything you buy—a coffee, a postcard, a shore excursion—is in US Dollars.21 Your Aussie credit card will almost certainly charge a 3% foreign transaction fee on every single purchase.
  • Drink Service Charge: Every single drink you buy (even a Coke) has a 15% service charge automatically added to the bill.19
  • Other Extras: Wi-Fi ($20-$28 USD/day) 90, Speciality Dining (e.g., The Verandah) 71, Shore Excursions 85, Spa Treatments 97, and Laundry.98

For an Australian couple on a 30-night cruise, it is realistic to budget an additional $2,500 AUD just for tips and a basic Wi-Fi plan, before you’ve bought a single drink or shore excursion.

Loyalty Programs

Cunard’s “World Club” is simple and becomes genuinely rewarding on the long voyages our members love.99 You join as a “Silver” member after your very first cruise.100 The perks accumulate based on voyages or nights sailed.

Here are the perks that really matter for seniors on a long trip.

Tier How to Qualify Key Senior-Relevant Perks
Silver 1 voyage • Member savings on select fares 100
Gold 2 voyages / 20 nights • Complimentary Internet credit ($45 USD) 101

Diamond 15 voyages / 150 nights • Large Internet credit ($135 USD) 102

Sample Itineraries from Australia

While Cunard doesn’t base a ship here full-time anymore 5, the Queens are beloved and regular visitors, offering some truly “bucket-list” voyages from Sydney.31

1. The “Grand Australian Circumnavigation”

  • Ship: Queen Elizabeth 12
  • Route: Round-trip from Sydney
  • Duration: 30-31 nights 12
  • Key Ports: Airlie Beach, Cairns, Darwin, Bali (Indonesia), Broome, Fremantle (Perth), Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart.12
  • Why it Suits Seniors: It’s the ultimate Australian holiday with no international flights. It’s a true “bucket list” trip taken at a gentle, stately pace, with plenty of luxurious sea days to enjoy the ship’s facilities.104

2. World Voyage Segment: Sydney to Asia

  • Ship: Queen Mary 2 10
  • Route: Sydney to Hong Kong (or Singapore) 10
  • Duration: 18-24 nights 10
  • Key Ports: Cairns, Darwin, Bitung (Indonesia), and ports in Vietnam.10
  • Why it Suits Seniors: A fantastic, one-way “fly-cruise” option. You get the grand, long voyage to Asia, and can then fly home or continue exploring from a major international hub.

3. World Voyage Segment: The Trans-Pacific

  • Ship: Queen Anne 10
  • Route: Sydney to Southampton (or a segment to the USA) 11
  • Duration: 45 nights (full segment) 10
  • Key Ports: Port Vila, Suva, Honolulu, Los Angeles, a full Panama Canal transit, Miami, Ponta Delgada.11
  • Why it Suits Seniors: This is a true “bucket-list” itinerary, combining the beauty of the South Pacific, the icons of the USA, and a major maritime marvel (the Panama Canal) all in one seamless trip.

Our Final Verdict: Is Cunard Right for You?

After all that, we come to the big question. We’ve seen reviews from 70-somethings who found it “boring” 28 and 30-somethings who “love love love” it because of the quiet, refined atmosphere.8

The divide is clear: Cunard isn’t about age, it’s about attitude.

Cunard is BEST suited for you if…

  • …You are a solo traveller. The single cabins and hosted events are the best at sea.26
  • …You believe “dressing up” for dinner is a joy, not a chore.8
  • …You prefer a fascinating lecture or a string quartet to a casino or a disco.8
  • …You want to sail with other well-travelled, considerate, and polite people.32
  • …You are retired and have the time for long, epic voyages.11
  • …You have a specific, complex dietary need (low-sodium, diabetic, etc.).74

Cunard may NOT suit you if…

  • …You hate the very idea of a dress code and just want to wear jeans and a T-shirt to dinner.95 (Though remember, the buffet is always an option! 69).
  • …You are on a tight, fixed budget. The onboard USD spending (gratuities, drinks) is a major, non-optional cost that can “HURT” an Aussie budget.21
  • …You are travelling alone and have significant mobility issues that require personal (lifting/pushing) assistance from crew.58
  • …You’re looking for a “party ship” atmosphere with high-energy activities.8

Overall Value Rating: 4/5 Stars

The value is excellent if you align with its traditional philosophy. The quality of the enrichment 7, the “White Star” service 32, and the exceptional dietary handling 76 are top-tier. It loses one star purely from an Australian perspective, as the non-inclusive, USD-based model is a poor and costly fit for our market.21

For over 180 years, Cunard’s goal has been to “refine the definitive experience of ocean travel”.2 If your definitive experience involves elegance, enrichment, and a journey that’s every bit as grand as the destination, then it’s time to pack your best dinner jacket or cocktail dress.

Happy sailing!

The "Queens": Your Home on the Water

Cunard’s four Queens offer classic elegance, superb dining, solo-friendly cabins, and excellent accessibility—perfect for travellers who want refined comfort and a beautifully designed ship.

Fleet Overview (The Four Queens)

Cunard’s fleet is small and distinct, with four ships known as “The Queens”.9

Checked

Queen Mary 2 (QM2): The “Grand Dame” and the flagship. She is the world’s only true ocean liner.46 What’s the difference? She was built with a thicker, stronger hull specifically for fast, smooth crossings of the rough North Atlantic. She is larger, grander, and feels incredibly stable, making her a favourite for long World Voyages.47

Checked

Queen Victoria (QV) & Queen Elizabeth (QE): These two are “sister ships,” meaning they are built to a similar design.9 They are classic cruise ships (not liners) and are slightly smaller than QM2 (around 2,081 guests).17 They are beloved for their art-deco elegance and more intimate feel. Queen Elizabeth is the ship that has often handled the full Australian circumnavigation.12

Checked

Queen Anne (QA): The brand new “Queen” who joined the fleet in 2024.9 She is the largest by guest count (around 3,000) 17 and offers a more modern, contemporary take on Cunard’s classic style, with several new restaurant and bar concepts.

Cabin Categories (Staterooms & Suites)

Cunard’s class-based system is a holdover from the old transatlantic days, but it’s really all about which restaurant you dine in.

Checked

Britannia Staterooms: This is the excellent “standard” accommodation, and where most guests stay.50 These include Inside (no window), Oceanview (window), and Balcony cabins. You dine in the magnificent, two-storey Britannia Restaurant.51

Checked

Britannia Club: A “step-up” from a standard balcony. The cabin is slightly more spacious, but the real perk is that you dine in the separate, more intimate, single-seating Britannia Club restaurant, which offers more flexibility.52

Checked

The “Grills” (Princess & Queens Grill): This is the exclusive, “ship-within-a-ship” experience.50 These are suites, and the benefits are significant. You get priority boarding, a concierge, and, most importantly, exclusive access to the open-seating Princess Grill or Queens Grill restaurants, which are renowned for their exceptional, fine-dining quality.50

Accessibility Cabins

Cunard is excellent for travellers with mobility needs. Fully accessible staterooms are available across all categories and ships. Their key features include 24:

  • A wide, 81cm (32-inch) doorway for wheelchair and scooter access.
  • A full “wet-room” style bathroom with no “lip” or step.
  • Grab rails for both the shower and the toilet.
  • A pull-down, wall-mounted shower seat.
  • A fully ramped, flush threshold to the balcony (in balcony cabins).

Solo Cabins

This is a major reason for solos to choose Cunard.

Checked

The Good News: Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria all feature a limited number of dedicated single staterooms.26 These are brilliant—often large Oceanview cabins with a single bed, priced for one person without a “single supplement”.56 They sell out very fast.

Checked

The Bad News: The new Queen Anne was not built with any dedicated solo cabins.27 This was a major disappointment for loyal Cunarders. This means a solo traveller on the newest ship must pay a hefty “single supplement” (often 150-200%) for a regular double cabin.

Ship Facilities for Mobility, Health & Comfort

Checked

Medical Centres: All ships have onboard medical centres staffed by qualified doctors and nurses.4 These are not covered by Medicare, so travel insurance is essential. All services are charged to your onboard account.

Checked

Mobility Aid Storage (The Critical Rule): This is a non-negotiable policy for safety. All personal mobility aids, including wheelchairs and electric scooters, must be stored inside your stateroom when not in use.58 They cannot be left in the corridors, as this creates a serious obstruction. This means if you have a full-size scooter, you must book an accessible cabin to ensure you have space.61 You must also notify Cunard on your pre-cruise questionnaire that you are bringing a device.59

Checked

Elevator & Deck Access: The ships are large, but they are very well-designed for mobility. There is excellent lift coverage to all passenger decks.25 All public spaces, restaurants, and lounges are wheelchair accessible.25

Checked

Quiet Spaces: Cunard excels here. The libraries are magnificent, multi-deck, wood-panelled havens of peace, often staffed by a librarian.62 Lounges like the Carinthia Lounge on QM2 are specifically designed for quiet reading and conversation.63
