Experience the world with a dash of Mediterranean flair aboard MSC Cruises — where modern luxury meets incredible value. From elegant ships to vibrant international energy, discover why MSC is the perfect blend of style, comfort, and adventure for senior travellers.
If you’ve ever dreamt of exploring the world with a touch of European flair, then MSC Cruises might just be the perfect ticket. Born from a family with a 300-year history on the seas, this cruise line brings a slice of Mediterranean style to every corner of the globe.1 For Aussie seniors, MSC’s biggest drawcard is its incredible value. The ships are modern, sparkling, and often feel far more luxurious than their budget-friendly price tags suggest, making those bucket-list destinations more accessible than ever.4 With special discounts for those over 65 and a wonderful array of amenities, from relaxing spas to grand theatres, it’s a fantastic way to see the world in comfort and style.7
Onboard, you’ll find a lively, bustling, and wonderfully international atmosphere. It’s a vibrant floating resort where you’ll hear a medley of languages and meet people from all walks of life—a truly enriching part of the adventure.9 This is different from some of the cruises you might be used to, but it’s this very European energy that makes an MSC holiday so memorable. So, grab a cuppa, and let’s dive into everything you need to know to plan your perfect MSC cruise holiday. In this guide, we’ll cover it all, from booking the best cabin to finding the best value onboard.
For many of our members, MSC hits that sweet spot between adventure and affordability. It’s a cruise line that encourages you to live life to the fullest, with a vibrant energy that’s truly infectious. Here are a few of the high-joy reasons our senior travellers are drawn to MSC.
Did You Know?
MSC Cruises is part of a much larger, privately-owned family company that started with just one cargo ship in 1970! The Aponte family’s 300-year maritime heritage is why you’ll feel that deep connection to the sea on every one of their beautiful ships.1
A little planning goes a long way to ensuring your MSC cruise is smooth sailing from the get-go. Here’s what you need to know before you book.
Timing your booking can lead to significant savings. Keep an eye out for these key periods:
MSC’s pricing is built around different “Experiences,” and choosing the right one is key to getting the best value for your holiday style. Many of the frustrations some travellers report stem from not understanding these tiers, so getting this right at booking is crucial for a great trip.47
When deciding, think about what matters most to you. If being able to choose a quiet cabin away from noisy areas and enjoying a cuppa on your balcony in the morning is important, the small extra cost for the Fantastica experience is well worth it.
When it comes to booking, using a trusted travel agent can be a great help. They often have access to special deals and can manage all the details for you, providing peace of mind. However, if you’re comfortable booking online, MSC’s website is straightforward to use.
Travel Tip: Choosing Your Cabin Wisely
For the smoothest ride with the least motion, book a cabin in the middle of the ship on a lower deck. If you anticipate spending lots of time at the buffet or pools, a cabin on a higher deck will save you from relying on the lifts, which can get very busy. To minimise noise, check the deck plans and avoid cabins directly below the pool deck or lido buffet, or above the theatre and late-night lounges.52
To make your journey as seamless as possible, MSC offers “Fly & Cruise” packages. These bundles include your flights, airport-to-port transfers, and the cruise itself, taking all the logistical stress out of your hands.53 You can also often book pre-cruise hotel stays through MSC, ensuring you arrive at the port rested and ready for embarkation.
From a quick and casual bite to an elegant multi-course meal, MSC offers a wide range of dining experiences.
Senior Saver: Drink Package Value
An MSC drink package can be excellent value if you plan on enjoying a few drinks throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is that if you’ll have more than four or five alcoholic beverages or specialty coffees daily, a package will likely save you money. The Premium Extra Package is the most comprehensive, covering nearly all drinks up to US16(A25) per glass. The key is to book your package online before you sail, as this can save you up to 40% compared to onboard prices.83
Be aware that from April 2025, this package will have a daily limit of 15 alcoholic drinks—more than enough for most people, but good to know.83
If both guests in a cabin want a package, both must purchase one.84
Staying in touch with loved ones back home or simply surfing the web is straightforward on an MSC cruise.
Your wellbeing is a top priority on any cruise, and MSC has comprehensive systems in place to ensure you can relax with peace of mind.
MSC’s approach to entertainment is focused on fun, spectacle, and activities that bring people together, rather than on quiet, academic pursuits.
With its lively atmosphere and international mix of guests, MSC is a wonderful place to meet new people and make lasting friendships.
You Should Know: Unwritten Social Etiquette
With a wonderful mix of European and international guests, a friendly smile is the universal language! It’s considered good form not to “reserve” sun loungers by leaving your towel and book on them for hours. While the buffet is casual, it’s polite to pop on a t-shirt or cover-up over your swimwear when you go inside to eat.23
MSC is known for its fantastic value, but it’s important to understand what’s included in your fare and what will be an extra charge. Being prepared for these costs is the key to a stress-free holiday without any nasty surprises on your final bill. Many of the negative reviews you might read online come from people who were caught off guard by these extras.18
If you enjoy your first MSC cruise, it’s well worth joining their loyalty program, the MSC Voyagers Club. It’s free to join and offers some excellent perks that become more valuable the more you sail.
While MSC offers cruises all over the world, here are a couple of itineraries that hold special appeal for Australian mature travellers.
This is the ultimate bucket-list adventure for the serious traveller. MSC is bringing one of its most beloved ships to our shores as part of its grand global voyage.
This is the quintessential MSC experience and a wonderfully affordable way to see the highlights of Europe.
So, after weighing everything up, is an MSC cruise the right choice for your next holiday? It all comes down to your personal travel style and what you value most in a vacation.
For the right type of traveller, MSC Cruises offers outstanding value and a wonderfully vibrant holiday. The key is to go in with the right expectations. Understand that it’s a lively, international, resort-style experience, and be prepared to budget for the extras that are important to you, like a drinks package or a few shore excursions. If you do that, you’re set for a magnificent and incredibly affordable adventure on the high seas.
As they say at MSC, it’s “Not just any cruise.” Happy sailing! 🛳️

Exploring new destinations is the heart of any cruise, and MSC offers a vast array of tours to help you make the most of your time ashore.
Excursion Style & Pricing: MSC offers a wide variety of tours, from sightseeing coach trips and guided historical walks to beach days and adventure activities. Prices can range from around A70forasimplecitytourtooverA200 for more in-depth or exclusive experiences. You can save up to 20% by booking your excursions online before your cruise.85
Gentle, Moderate & Active Tours: MSC has an award-winning program called “Easy & Accessible Tours” which is absolutely brilliant for seniors or anyone with mobility concerns. These tours are specifically designed with step-free routes, shorter walking distances, a slower pace, and vehicles equipped with ramps or lifts. They ensure you can experience the highlights of a destination comfortably and without stress.86
Independent Touring & Shuttle Services: In many ports, particularly in the Mediterranean, it’s very easy to explore independently. You can often walk off the ship right into town or find local taxis and hop-on-hop-off buses at the pier. Be aware that MSC sometimes offers its own shuttle bus to the city centre for a fee, which may be more expensive than local options, so it pays to compare.47
Port Accessibility Challenges: Some destinations, like the Greek Islands or Italy’s Amalfi Coast, may require the use of a tender—a small boat that ferries passengers from the anchored ship to the shore. This process can involve steps and uneven surfaces, which can be challenging for those with significant mobility issues. Guests in the higher tiers of the loyalty program often receive priority tender access.88
Booking & Cancellation: It’s wise to book popular excursions well in advance through the MSC website, as they can sell out quickly. Be sure to check the cancellation policy, as it is typically stricter than for the cruise itself.
Travel Tip: Trusted Third-Party Tour Operators
Booking your shore excursions through an independent company can often provide a more personal experience in a smaller group and at a better price. Reputable operators that are popular with senior travellers include Shore Excursions Group and Viator. Crucially, they offer a “back-to-ship guarantee”—if your tour is unexpectedly delayed, they guarantee they will get you to the ship’s next port of call at their own expense. This provides essential peace of mind when exploring independently.89
For those with specific mobility needs, Sage Traveling is a specialist in fully accessible tours in the Mediterranean.92
Your cabin is your sanctuary at sea, and MSC’s modern fleet offers a comfortable home away from home.
MSC’s fleet is diverse, ranging from classic-sized ships to some of the largest mega-ships in the world. They are generally grouped into classes with similar designs and amenities.
Ship Categories: The smaller Lirica Class and mid-sized Musica Class offer a more traditional cruise experience that is easier to navigate. The larger Fantasia Class introduced the glamorous Swarovski crystal staircases and the exclusive Yacht Club. The newest Meraviglia, Seaside, and World Class ships are massive floating resorts, packed with features, restaurants, and entertainment zones called “districts”.19
Best Ships for Seniors: For travellers who prefer a more manageable and relaxed atmosphere, the Musica Class ships (MSC Magnifica, MSC Poesia, MSC Orchestra, MSC Musica) are an excellent choice. They are large enough to offer plenty of amenities but are not as overwhelming as the mega-ships.19 The newest, largest ships are beautiful and exciting but be prepared for a lot of walking and potentially long waits for lifts, which can be a challenge for those with mobility concerns.58
MSC offers a range of accommodation to suit every budget and preference.
Inside: The most affordable option, these cabins have no window. They are perfect for those who plan to spend most of their time out and about on the ship and just need a comfortable place to sleep.50
Oceanview: These cabins feature a picture window with a view of the sea that does not open. They offer more natural light than an inside cabin for a small step up in price.50
Balcony: The most popular choice, these cabins come with a private balcony with a table and chairs. It’s a wonderful private space to enjoy a morning coffee, read a book, or watch the world sail by.51
Suite: Suites offer more space, a larger balcony (some with private whirlpools), and a separate sitting area. They come with additional perks, especially if booked with the Aurea Experience or in the Yacht Club.50
Accessible Cabins: MSC offers cabins specifically designed for guests with disabilities or reduced mobility. These are significantly larger than standard cabins and feature wider doorways (around 90 cm), ramped access to the balcony, and a fully accessible wet-room-style bathroom with grab rails and a fold-down shower seat. They are located near the lifts for convenience. It is essential to book these cabins well in advance as they are limited in number.31
Solo Cabins: Some of the newer ships, like those in the Meraviglia class, have “Interior Studio” cabins. These are smaller rooms with a single bed, perfectly designed and priced for one person. On other ships, solo travellers should look for special promotions with reduced single supplements, which MSC offers quite frequently.32
Medical Centres: Every ship in the fleet has a well-equipped Medical Centre staffed by a qualified doctor and medical personnel. It is open for scheduled appointments and is available 24/7 for any emergencies. Note that medical services onboard are charged as a private service, so comprehensive travel insurance is a must.62
Mobility Aid Storage: You must bring your own wheelchair or mobility scooter. For safety reasons, all mobility aids must be stored inside your cabin when not in use and cannot be left in the corridors. You must inform MSC of any mobility equipment you are bringing by filling out the Special Needs Form when you book.67
Elevator Coverage & Deck Accessibility: All passenger decks and public areas are accessible via lifts. On the newer, larger ships, these lifts can become very busy during peak times (like before dinner or during disembarkation), so it’s wise to allow extra time. Lifts are equipped with Braille and audio announcements for deck numbers.31
