Seabourn offers complimentary dining, engaging entertainment, free wellness facilities, social activities, a cozy Seabourn Square on sea days, unique ports on shore days, and extra-cost spa services.
Seabourn offers an intimate, yacht-like luxury experience with near 1:1 service, personalised attention, and small-ship access to unique ports—perfect for discerning seniors.
Hello, fellow travellers! If you’ve reached a wonderful point in life where you feel you’ve outgrown the 4,000-passenger mega-ships, you’re in the right place. We’re here to talk about Seabourn, and to put it simply, sailing with them is less like being on a cruise ship and more like being a guest at a magnificent, floating private club.1 Their small, intimate ships feel like your own private yacht, granting you access to those lesser-known ports and hidden hideaways that larger vessels can only dream of sailing past.2
What truly makes Seabourn special for our 60+ members is the feeling of being genuinely known. The ships carry only 264 to 600 guests 4, but the crew numbers are nearly the same.4 This isn’t just about fast service; it’s about personal connection. It’s the bar steward who remembers your favourite single malt, the dining staff who know you by name after the first day 5, and the pleasure of sharing the journey with other interesting, “accomplished,” and well-travelled people just like you.4 It’s a world where the anonymity of a big ship disappears, replaced by a warm, sophisticated, and incredibly welcoming community.
In this guide, we’ll unpack everything you need to know to decide if this is the right “club” for your next adventure. We’ll look at the all-inclusive value, the accommodation, the social life, and—most importantly—the practical details on health and accessibility, all from an Australian senior’s perspective.
The value of a Seabourn cruise is in what you don’t have to pay for onboard. Your fare includes all premium spirits, all dining, gratuities, and the basic Surf Wi-Fi package.18
Travel Tip: Choosing Your Suite
For the most comfortable ride in open water, ask your travel agent for a suite located mid-ship and on a lower to middle deck. This is the ship’s natural balance point, where you’ll feel the least motion. Also, have a look at the deck plan and book a suite near the central lift lobby.42 This will save you a lot of walking down long hallways to get to Seabourn Square or The Restaurant.
Senior Saver: Drink Package Analysis
This is the easiest analysis we’ve ever done: you do not need a drink package. Seabourn’s fares are truly all-inclusive. That covers complimentary premium spirits, fine wines by the glass, beers, cocktails, and (of course) champagne, available all day, everywhere on the ship.18
The only “package” you’ll see advertised is the Wine Collector Package.87 This is an optional extra for connoisseurs, allowing you to buy bottles from the ultra-premium Reserve Wine Menu at a bulk rate. It is absolutely not a necessity.
You Should Know: The Social Etiquette
This is a ship for “engaging with others”.30 The vibe is like a “private house in the country” 5, not an anonymous hotel. People are friendly, they will say hello in the lift, and they’ll start conversations at the coffee bar. Joining a shared table is a normal and encouraged part of the social fabric.
Seabourn’s own guiding philosophy, often quoted from the storyteller Ibn Battuta, says it all: “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”.1
Happy travels!

No, but “Adult-Oriented.” Children are permitted, but there are no kids’ clubs or family programs.28 The demographic skews heavily to adults, with an average passenger age around 60+.6 |

Dining & Cuisine: The keyword is choice, and it’s all complimentary.32 You can have a casual (but excellent) burger at The Patio 32, enjoy a lavish buffet or themed sit-down dinner at The Colonnade 32, or opt for a sophisticated, multi-course meal in The Restaurant.62 For a special night, the new Mediterranean-inspired Solis is a must.32 Or, simply have a full restaurant meal served course-by-course in your own suite.63
Entertainment & Enrichment: The “vibe” is sophisticated and engaging. Evenings are for live music in The Club 64 or elegant classical and cabaret-style shows in the Grand Salon.65 Days are for high-calibre enrichment, headlined by the Seabourn Conversations program.35
Wellness & Relaxation: The Spa at Seabourn is a major feature, but all treatments are an extra cost.67 The gym, Motion Studio (for yoga and meditation), and saunas are all complimentary.67 A real highlight on the expedition ships (Venture and Pursuit) are the stunning, glass-walled saunas with panoramic ocean views.67
Activities & Classes: This is a very social ship. You’ll find popular daily activities like bridge (held in the dedicated Card Room), team trivia, and dance classes.64
Sea Days vs Port Days:
Costs: Spa treatments (a 75-minute massage can be over $200 USD) 71 and access to the Thermal Suite 72 are the main extra charges.
Shore excursions on Seabourn offer rich experiences but come with extra costs and some mobility considerations.
Excursion Style: This is the main “extra” you’ll pay for. Shore excursions are not included in your fare.6 They are high-quality, small-group experiences categorised by interest, such as the “Cultural Collection” (visiting UNESCO sites) or the “Epicurean Collection” (food and wine tours).89
Pricing (in AUD): All onboard and excursion prices are in US Dollars. This is important for us to budget for. A simple “At Your Leisure” coach transfer might be $110 USD (approx. $165 AUD).90 A 7-hour tour in Queensland is listed at $90 USD (approx. $135 AUD).91 A private car with a guide for a day can be as much as $1,100 USD (approx. $1,650 AUD).92
Gentle/Moderate/Active Tours: Seabourn is very good at labelling the activity level of each tour.93
Independent Touring & Shuttles: Seabourn makes this very easy. In most ports where the ship docks away from the main town, they provide a complimentary shuttle bus to the city centre.95
Port Accessibility Challenges (CRITICAL WARNING):
This is the great paradox of Seabourn. The brand promise is visiting “hidden” ports where big ships can’t go.2 The reason big ships can’t go there is a lack of deep-water docking. This means a heavy reliance on tenders.
Booking & Cancellation: You should book your “must-do” excursions online before you sail. This gets you the best price and secures your spot.97 The cancellation policy is generally very fair: a full refund if you cancel 48 hours before the tour.99
Travel Tip: Third-Party Tours
The ship’s tours are excellent but can be pricey. For a better value, many of our members use reputable independent companies like Venture Ashore 102 or Shore Excursions Group.103 They offer small-group tours, often for less, and (most importantly) provide a “Back to Ship Guarantee,” so you can explore with peace of mind.
Seabourn’s small, all-suite ships offer refined luxury, superb service, and excellent accessible suites—though only these have wide doors for mobility aids. Ideal for intimate, upscale travel.
Seabourn’s fleet is small, modern, and perfectly formed. It’s divided into three distinct classes 8:
Odyssey-class: Seabourn Sojourn, Seabourn Quest (built 2010-2011).3 These are the intimate “originals,” carrying just 450 guests.3
Encore-class: Seabourn Encore, Seabourn Ovation (built 2016-2018).3 These are slightly larger, carrying 600 guests 3, and feature expanded public spaces and additional dining venues.4
Expedition-class: Seabourn Venture, Seabourn Pursuit (built 2022-2023).2 These are purpose-built, PC6 ice-strengthened vessels for polar exploration. They carry only 264 guests and are equipped with Zodiacs, kayaks, and two custom-built submarines.2
All-Suite Fleet: This is the key. There are no “inside” or “oceanview” cabins.2 Every single room is a spacious suite, and over 90% have a private veranda.4
Standard Suite: The entry-level Veranda Suite is a joy. It’s typically over 300 sq. ft. with a 65+ sq. ft. balcony.53 It includes a walk-in wardrobe 26, a beautiful marble bathroom with both a deep soaking tub and a separate shower 26, and a complimentary bar, stocked with your preferences.26
Solo Cabins: While there are no dedicated single cabins 54, solos simply book a standard suite. The good news is that Seabourn offers reduced single supplements (sometimes as low as 125% or 150% instead of the 200% industry standard) on many voyages, making it very appealing.21
Accessibility Cabins (The Critical Details):
This is, without a doubt, the most important planning detail for any member with a mobility aid.
If you use a wheelchair or scooter, you must book one of these specific accessible suites, and you should book early as they are limited.
Medical Centre: All ships have a medical centre staffed by a qualified doctor and nurses, equipped to handle emergencies and providing advanced cardiac life support.58
Mobility Aid Storage (IMPORTANT): Due to safety regulations, all mobility aids (like scooters) must be stored and charged inside your suite.22 They are not permitted to be left in hallways or lobbies.22 This rule reinforces why booking an accessible suite with a 32-inch door is non-negotiable.
Elevator Coverage: Lifts (elevators) cover all main guest decks. A small tip: on the Encore and Ovation ships, some venues like The Restaurant are best accessed via the rear lifts.61
