Why Virgin Voyages is a surprisingly perfect fit for 60+ travellers seeking great food, adult-only serenity, and a fresh, modern cruise experience.
If you’ve been keeping an ear to the ground in the world of travel, you’ve likely heard the buzz around Virgin Voyages. It’s the new kid on the block in the cruising world, and it’s doing things a little differently. Forget what you think you know about cruising—the formal nights, the crowded buffets, the kids running down the hallways. Virgin has thrown that rulebook overboard to create something fresh, modern, and exclusively for adults.
This guide has been put together especially for our Seniors Travel Club members to give you the full story on Virgin Voyages. We’ll dive deep into what makes it tick, who it’s for, and whether it’s the right fit for your next grand adventure on the high seas.
At its heart, Virgin Voyages is built on a philosophy they call “Adult-by-Design”.1 This isn’t just a simple “no kids allowed” rule; it’s the very foundation of the entire experience. Every single aspect of their ships, from the restaurants to the entertainment and wellness offerings, has been crafted with an adult audience in mind.3 The result is a sophisticated, relaxed, and kid-free sanctuary at sea—a perfect escape for those of us who’ve done the family holidays and are now looking for a holiday that’s all about us.5 From the moment you step on board, you’re not a “passenger”; you’re a “Sailor,” a small but significant change in language that sets the tone for a more adventurous and communal journey.6
When we dig past the marketing, the “high-joy” factors for mature travellers are crystal clear and incredibly appealing.
Did You Know?
Virgin’s first ship, Scarlet Lady, gets her name from one of the earliest planes to fly for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Atlantic airline.12 It’s a nod to the company’s “rock and roll” British heritage and its history of shaking up industries.
This is where you need to be savvy. Booking a Virgin Voyage used to be incredibly simple, but recent changes have made it far more complex. The original “simple and inclusive” promise has been clouded by new fare structures and unbundled charges.35 This new model is designed to make their lead-in prices look more competitive, but it creates new traps for the unwary. Here’s how you navigate them.
This is now the most complex part of booking. Pay close attention to these new policies to avoid a nasty surprise on your onboard account.
You Should Know: The New Fares: Why ‘Base’ is a Bad Bet
Virgin has moved to an airline-style fare system, and it’s a critical change.39
For years, one of Virgin’s biggest selling points was “Tips Included”.9 For new bookings made from 7 October 2025, this is NO LONGER THE CASE.21
Travel Tip: How to Pick a Quiet Cabin
The “Lady Ships” are well-designed, but sound travels. For guaranteed peace, you need to be strategic.
This is perhaps Virgin’s biggest departure from traditional senior cruising. They have actively replaced classic enrichment, like lectures and craft classes, with social and wellness activities. This is a critical point of difference that you must know.
Virgin’s “enrichment” is not academic. You will not find guest lecturers on art history, politics, or the local destinations.65
The focus is squarely on:
You Should Know: There is No Library
This is a key fact that surprises many traditional cruisers. There is no dedicated library or quiet reading room on board any of the ships.58
So, if you’re a bookworm, where do you go for some peace and quiet?
Travel Tip: Where to Read a Book in Peace
You Should Know: There is No Bridge or Card Room
Another major departure from tradition. There is no dedicated room for bridge, mahjong, or other traditional card games.75 While you can, of course, find a table and play, there is no organised program for it.
The focus is entirely on the Casino (Deck 6).76 It’s a large, modern casino with a mix of traditional and new slot machines, blackjack, craps, and roulette.76 For serious poker players, they also have a dedicated WPT at Sea Poker Room.77
This is Virgin’s crown jewel and, in our opinion, the best dining model at sea. They have completely eliminated three mainstays of old-school cruising 9:
The philosophy is that all food is “made-to-order”.10 This dramatically reduces waste and massively increases the quality and freshness. You dine when you want, where you want, with whomever you want. Reservations for the main restaurants are made via the Virgin Voyages app.44
A note on technology: This app-centric model can be a barrier for less tech-savvy seniors. While you can book by visiting the restaurant or Sailor Services 80, the app is the primary method. We recommend getting comfortable with it before you sail, or just popping by the Sailor Services desk on Deck 5 for help.
Instead of a buffet, you have “The Galley”.29
This is where Virgin truly shines. All 6+ specialty restaurants are 100% included in your fare.10 You can eat at the steakhouse every night if you want to (and can get a booking!).78
This section consolidates the key health and mobility points, which are non-negotiable for ensuring a safe and comfortable trip. The key theme is “great facilities, but you must be prepared.”
This is a real standout feature of Virgin Voyages. The gym (called “B-Complex”) is huge, state-of-the-art, and has fantastic ocean views.70
Best of all, all group fitness classes are included in your fare.34 This is a huge value-add, as other lines charge $20+ for these.
Classes include:
The “Redemption Spa” is the onboard spa, and it’s a stunning, cave-like sanctuary.93
Travel Tip: Spa on a Port Day
The Thermal Suite is significantly cheaper and less crowded on days when the ship is in port.93 If you’re having a quiet day or coming back early, this is the absolute best and most relaxing time to go.
in the industry for experienced cruisers.
The program is simple and based on the number of voyages you’ve completed.111
Senior Saver: Match Your Status From Other Cruise Lines
This is the section that hits closest to home, and we need to be direct and honest about the past, and the future.
You Should Know: Don’t Wait for Virgin to Return to Australia
So, after all that, what’s the final word for a savvy 60+ Australian traveller?
Our Rating: 4/5 Stars
Virgin Voyages offers a phenomenal product. The food is, without question, the best at sea in its price bracket. The service is outstanding, and the ships are stunning. The “no kids” promise is, for many, priceless.
It has lost a star in our books purely because of the new, complex fare structures and the re-introduction of mandatory, extra gratuities.21 This move undermines the simple, “what-you-see-is-what-you-get” value that was once their greatest strength.9
Our final advice: If you are a “young at heart” senior who values freedom, style, and incredible food, we say go for it. Just be sure to budget for the new extra charges, use the “Status Match” program, and book that fly-cruise to Europe or the Caribbean.
It’s a truly different and refreshing way to holiday. Go on, “Set Sail the Virgin Way!”

A chic, boutique-hotel vibe with friendly guests, no dress codes, optional themed nights, relaxed days, lively evenings, and total freedom to dress and enjoy as you like.
Onboard Atmosphere: “Young at Heart”
This is the follow-up to our earlier point about the age myth. The “vibe” is not a 24/7, thumping party. It’s better described as a “boutique hotel at sea”.56
The “No Dress Code” Dress Code
This is a massive relief for many of our members. There are NO formal nights.19
What About Themed Nights?
These are entirely optional, “a bit of fun” events. You won’t feel left out if you don’t participate.
Small-group, authentic excursions with clear activity info; book early, and choose Virgin’s tours for the peace-of-mind guarantee that the ship will wait if delays occur.
Excursion Types
Virgin calls their shore excursions “Shore Things,” and they are a bit different from the norm.97
You Should Know: “The ‘Ship Won’t Wait’ Rule”
For the 60+ traveller, peace of mind is often worth more than saving a few dollars.
A simple four-ship fleet with identical layouts, balcony-heavy cabins, excellent accessible rooms, but some mobility hurdles—plus mid-size comfort and solid onboard facilities.
The “Lady Ships”: The fleet is wonderfully simple. It consists of four identical sister ships: Scarlet Lady (2020), Valiant Lady (2021), Resilient Lady (2023), and Brilliant Lady (2025).13
The “Goldilocks” Size: They are all mid-size, holding approximately 2,770 passengers.11 This is a huge plus. They are big enough to have lots of amazing dining and entertainment options, but small enough to never feel overwhelmingly crowded like a 6,000-passenger mega-ship.
Best Ship for Seniors: Because they are identical, the “best” ship is simply the one sailing the itinerary you want to take.14 The onboard experience, restaurants, cabins, and layouts are the same across the fleet.
Virgin has ditched the traditional, boring names for their own “rockstar” categories. Here’s what they mean.
Insider: An inside cabin. Good for those who just want a dark, quiet place to sleep and plan to be out and about all day.
Sea View: A standard oceanview cabin with a (porthole) window.
Sea Terrace: This is their standard balcony cabin, and they are the vast majority of rooms onboard (a whopping 86% of all cabins have one).12 They famously feature a red, hand-woven “Seabed” hammock on the balcony, perfect for an afternoon read.
RockStar Quarters (Suites): These are the suites, ranging from “Seriously Suite” to “Massive Suite”.46 They come with a host of premium perks like early booking access for restaurants, priority boarding, and access to a private, suites-only sundeck called “Richard’s Rooftop.”
This is a mixed bag, with some features being best-in-class and others being surprisingly difficult.
Accessibility Cabins (The Gold Standard)
Virgin’s accessible cabins are genuinely excellent and thoughtfully designed.25
Mobility Aid Policy (A Critical Hurdle)
Here is where Virgin’s focus on sleek design creates a major financial and logistical hurdle for travellers with mobility scooters.
