Would You Book an ALDI Holiday? One Family Did — Here’s What Happened

Dreaming of a family getaway that won’t break the bank? You’re not alone! With the cost of living on the rise, many Aussies are on the hunt for affordable holiday options that still deliver a memorable experience.

Enter ALDI Holidays, a relatively new player in the travel game, promising big savings on everything from beach escapes to bucket-list adventures. But is it really as good as it sounds?

But is it really as good as it sounds? One Aussie mum, Tania Green, decided to find out for herself, and her experience is a must-read for anyone considering an ALDI holiday.

A Leap of Faith: Booking the ALDI Holiday

Tania first stumbled across the ALDI Holidays deal for Kingfisher Bay Resort on K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) while daydreaming about her next adventure. Like many of us, she was a bit sceptical. Would there be hidden costs? Would the inclusions actually be honoured? And what about customer service? Would she be left in the lurch if something went wrong?

‘I was hoping to be inspired to explore somewhere new, and came across a package for Kingfisher Bay Resort on K’gari,’ she shared.

According to her, while scrolling online, she stumbled across a tempting package: five nights at Kingfisher Bay Resort on K’gari (formerly Fraser Island), all for just $980. The deal included daily buffet breakfast, return ferry transfers from Hervey Bay, a $100 resort activity credit, a light show, and sunset drinks. For a family of three, it sounded almost too good to be true.

But Tania was cautious. Having worked in travel and tourism, she knew the pitfalls, such as hidden costs, tricky terms, and the dreaded fine print. She’d also had a less-than-stellar experience with Ignite Travel Group, the agency behind ALDI’s holiday deals, and worried about what might go wrong.

Doing the Homework: Research Pays Off

Before booking, Tania did her due diligence. She compared prices with other booking sites, read reviews, and checked out the resort’s own website. After crunching the numbers and adding an $80 room upgrade, she decided to take the plunge.

‘It seemed to be great value for money, so I took the leap. I was quite comfortable that there wouldn’t be too much need for the travel agent to be involved after my booking, so I took a chance.’ she said.

However, there was a catch: even though her five-year-old daughter would be sharing the bed, the family was hit with a $250 occupancy fee for the little one. This brought the total to just over $1,300 for five nights, still a bargain at $263 per night, considering all the inclusions.

Smooth Sailing (Mostly): The ALDI Holiday Experience

Tania’s worries about a rocky check-in were quickly put to rest. The resort staff were well-versed in handling ALDI Holidays bookings, and all the package inclusions were explained clearly at check-in. Activities were booked straight away, and the family was whisked off to their room overlooking a tranquil lagoon.

The resort itself was a classic 1990s-style eco retreat, with open walkways, lush wildlife, and a relaxed, family-friendly vibe. The room was comfortable, private, and came with a little deck perfect for lounging. Daily servicing was a pleasant surprise, adding a touch of luxury to the stay.

The family made the most of their $100 resort credit by joining a full-day island explorer tour, spotting dingoes, swimming in Lake McKenzie, and exploring the island’s unique landscapes. They also enjoyed a Bush Tucker Talk & Taste tour, and filled their days with complimentary ranger-led walks and swims.

The Fine Print: What to Watch Out For

While Tania’s experience was overwhelmingly positive, she did have some words of caution for fellow travellers:

Do Your Research

Not all room types are available through ALDI Holidays, and upgrades can sometimes cost more than booking directly. Always check the resort’s own deals and call their reservations team to compare.

Ask Questions Before Booking

Customer service can be slow, and you may need to follow up multiple times to get answers. Make sure you understand all the terms and conditions before you pay.

Check for Extra Fees

In Tania’s case, the occupancy fee for her daughter was an unexpected cost. If you’re travelling with kids or have special requirements, clarify these details before booking.

Consider Travel Insurance

With any third-party booking, it’s wise to protect yourself in case things go awry.

Key Takeaways

  • Despite initial worries about hidden costs and poor customer service from the partnering agency, the family found the booking process at the resort smooth and the inclusions as advertised.
  • The family enjoyed various tours and activities, highlighted the convenience of on-site experiences, and appreciated unexpected extras like daily room servicing.
