Are you unknowingly breaking the rules? Shocking changes to free hotel perks every traveller needs to know

If you’ve ever checked into a hotel and made a beeline for the bathroom goodies or the tempting snacks on the counter, you’re not alone. For decades, travellers have come to expect a few little luxuries as part of the hotel experience – mini soaps, shower caps, maybe even a sewing kit or a cheeky chocolate on the pillow.

But in a surprising twist, it seems that some of these once-free perks are now coming with a hidden price tag, and many guests are getting caught out.

A recent story from a traveller named Jaden has been making the rounds online, and it’s a cautionary tale for anyone who loves a hotel freebie. While staying at a hotel in Texas, Jaden was delighted to find a selection of single-use items in the bathroom – shower steamers, face masks, and more.

They were displayed right alongside the usual complimentary amenities like a dental kit and lint roller, so he naturally assumed they were all free.

But as Jaden soon discovered, appearances can be deceiving. Tucked away behind one of the shower steamers was a minibar menu, revealing that these enticing extras actually came with a hefty charge.

‘You open up the minibar menu, and it turns out that all of those things are chargeable instead of included amenities,’ Jaden explained in a video that quickly went viral.

He went on to call out the hotel for what he saw as a ‘deliberately misleading’ tactic. Not only were the chargeable items mixed in with the free ones, but the menu explaining the charges was hidden from view.

‘If you were to just grab from the items on the right, you would use one without knowing it was charged,’ he warned.

Jaden’s experience struck a chord with many fellow travellers, who shared their own stories of unexpected charges. One commenter said, ‘Having the menu behind everything seems wildly unethical.’ Another added, ‘An unexpected $35 charge for hand soap on my bill would ensure that I never stayed there again, no matter if it was the best hotel stay of my life.’

And it’s not just the fancy extras that are catching people out. One traveller reported being charged for instant coffee and tea bags in a five-star hotel – something that used to be a standard freebie. ‘I’ll never go back,’ they vowed.

So, what’s behind this shift? As hotels look for new ways to boost revenue in a competitive market, some are quietly moving previously complimentary items into the ‘pay-per-use’ category. It’s a trend that’s left many guests feeling frustrated and, frankly, a bit ripped off.

How to Avoid Surprise Charges at Hotels

If you’re planning a trip, here are a few tips to help you steer clear of unexpected fees:

1. Read the Fine Print

Always check the minibar menu and any signage in your room. If you’re not sure whether something is free, ask at the front desk before using it.

2. Look for Signs

Some hotels now hang clear signs on bottled water or snacks, indicating which items are complimentary and which come with a charge. If it’s not obvious, proceed with caution.

3. Check Your Bill

Before checking out, review your bill carefully for any surprise charges. If you spot something you didn’t expect, don’t hesitate to query it with reception.

4. Bring Your Own Essentials

To avoid any confusion, consider packing your own toiletries, snacks, and even tea or coffee sachets.

Why Are Hotels Doing This?

The hospitality industry has faced tough times in recent years, with rising costs and changing guest expectations. While some hotels are genuinely trying to offer more choice, others may be hoping that guests won’t notice the extra charges until it’s too late.

Either way, transparency is key – no one likes to feel tricked.
