First-time cruiser? Avoid this common mistake and discover the best cruises for an unforgettable trip!

Thinking about setting sail for the first time? You’re not alone! Cruising has become one of Australia’s favourite ways to holiday, and it’s easy to see why. With everything bundled into one neat package (accommodation, meals, entertainment, and transport), cruises offer a stress-free escape that’s hard to beat, especially when household budgets are feeling the pinch.

According to new research from the Tourism & Transport Forum, a whopping one-third of Aussies are considering a cruise this year. And it’s not just the seasoned travellers getting on board—first-time cruisers are flocking to the decks in record numbers, with Travel Associates reporting a 36 per cent jump in first-timers over the past year.

‘At a time when household budgets are under pressure, cruising bundles accommodation, meals, activities and transport into a single package,’ says TTF CEO Margy Osmond.

But before you rush to book the cheapest cabin on the shortest cruise, there are a few insider tips that could make or break your maiden voyage.

Why Your Cabin Choice Matters More Than You Think

It’s tempting to focus on price, especially if you’re new to cruising and not sure what to expect. But Adam Crossman, a cruising specialist at Travel Associates, warns that scrimping on your cabin can backfire.

‘Focusing purely on price can mean feeling confined to a smaller space, which can immediately turn people off cruising,’ he says.

For first-timers, Adam recommends splashing out a little extra for a mid-ship balcony cabin. Why? Access to fresh air and natural light can make a world of difference, especially if you’re not used to spending days at sea.

A balcony gives you your own private slice of ocean views, a place to enjoy your morning cuppa, and a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the ship.

Short Cruises: Not Always the Best Introduction

You might think a quick 2-3 night ‘taster cruise’ is the perfect way to dip your toes in the water. But according to the experts, these short trips can actually give you a skewed impression of cruising. Short cruises often attract a party crowd and a narrower demographic, and there’s simply not enough time to settle in and experience all the ship has to offer.

Instead, aim for a 7-10 night cruise. This gives you a good mix of sea days (to explore the ship and relax) and shore excursions (to discover new destinations). You’ll have time to find your sea legs, try different activities, and truly unwind—without feeling rushed.

Prepay and Package Up for Peace of Mind

Another common pitfall for first-timers is underestimating the extras. While your cruise fare covers a lot, things like drinks, Wi-Fi, and specialty dining can add up quickly if you’re not careful. Adam’s advice? Prepay for as much as possible and look for more inclusive packages.

Many cruise lines now offer bundles that include drinks, Wi-Fi, and even gratuities. Not only does this often work out cheaper in the long run, but it also means you can relax and enjoy yourself without worrying about a mounting bill at the end of your trip.

Other Tips for First-Time Cruisers

  • Do your research: Not all cruise lines are created equal. Some cater to families, others to couples or solo travellers. Some are all about luxury, while others focus on fun and adventure. Read reviews, ask friends, and choose a cruise that matches your style.
  • Pack smart: Cruise cabins are compact, so pack light and bring only what you need. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable shoes for shore excursions.
  • Arrive early: If your cruise departs from another city, consider arriving a day early. This gives you a buffer in case of travel delays and lets you start your holiday stress-free.
  • Get involved: From trivia nights to dance classes, there’s always something happening on board. Don’t be shy—join in and make the most of the experience!

The Bottom Line

Cruising can be an incredible way to see the world, meet new people, and enjoy a holiday where everything is taken care of. But your first cruise can set the tone for how you feel about cruising in the future.

By choosing the right cabin, booking a longer itinerary, and opting for inclusive packages, you’ll give yourself the best chance of falling in love with life at sea.

Key Takeaways

  • Cruising is booming in popularity with a 36 per cent increase in first-time cruisers in the past year, especially as Aussies look for cost-effective, stress-free holidays that bundle accommodation, meals, activities and transport.
  • Experts recommend first-timers spend a bit extra on a mid-ship balcony cabin, as focusing only on the cheapest option can leave you feeling confined and may put you off cruising altogether.
  • Rather than picking a short ‘taster’ cruise, it’s better for newbies to book a longer cruise of 7-10 nights, which gives a more balanced experience and a true feel for life at sea.
  • Prepaying for things like drinks, Wi-Fi, and specialty dining (or opting for a more inclusive package) helps avoid disappointment with extra charges onboard and makes the cruise experience smoother and more enjoyable.
